Okay, folks, for some unknown reason, we're now getting three threads a week started about clutch malfunctions.
The usual cause is that the system hasn't been properly bled.

Have at it.

I put in a used, but in good condition master cylinder, to replace the one I had before with a broken rubber seal. I did not bleed any components, I simply took out the old one, and bolted the new one up. Then I proceeded to fill the reservoir with dot 3 brake fluid. Bubbles rose to the top of the reservoir, then I topped it off after the fluid ran down into the system. I looked at the clutch pedal and noticed it was still sitting on the floor. I tried pulling it up off the floor, but it only went up a few inches. Probably some adjusting that needs to be done with the rod is causing that. Anyway when I pull it up there is quite a bit of resistance, where when I let go the pedal just pulls right back to the floor. I've heard there is a vacuum going on, where with air in the system, it is just pulling that sucker right back. I tried pumping the crap out of the pedal with a friend opening the bleeder valve and I just shoot clutch fluid everywhere.. I Stop after about 50 pumps and put more fluid and keep going, but notice no improvement. Does anyone know what I need to do? Can anyone verify it is the air in the system causing my problem? Thank you,
Mike

I have a few different questions so I figured I'd put them all in one topic. First of all I have a 90 GST and the tranny likes to grind sometimes. I've put Sycromesh tranny fluid and a new slave cylinder in both of which have helped. It will usually be fine when I first start driving but the more I drive the worse it gets. Its also hard to get into gear sometimes, I really have to force it, but other times its a nice easy shift. Are there any other things I should change/check out? Its the worst in reverse, it will work fine when I first start the car but after a few minutes of driving it likes to grind.

Also my clutch has some play in it when I release it it doesn't spring up all the way. Its about an inch where I can push it in and it won't do anything and I have to pull it back with my foot to get the clutch all the way out. Is this normal and if not how can I fix it?

Finally I'm looking for shifter bushings and short shifter. What shifter bushings are the best? What short shifters are available for the 90s? Every one I find seems to say its for every year besides 90.

Thanks for any answers or help you can give me.

Check your shifter cables and make sure they are working properly, my car was doing this for a while and then the cables actually broke so i had them replaced and it was fine. Your synchros might also be going out too

Thought I'll chime in, my clutch pedal is doing the same. When I exit the freeway at high speeds coming to a stop, I press the clutch pedal to shift to netural and it gets stuck then I have to use my feet to pull it out. I've been searching on here and it says slave cylinder. Could that be your problem also.

I searched "Pedal Pump Up" maybe I am just misunderstanding the theory. I've adjusted the rod before but I have never touched the "Upper Adjuster". It just does not seem right at all to me. The pedal becomes REALLY hard and almost every time I push the clutch, in the car wants to die as well. Do I just need to continue to bleed my clutch more? I've done it quite a bit so far. The way I see it, is that air expands when it gets hot, right? So when the car warms up then it expands the air that is still in the clutch line making the pedal stiffer, right?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I made the adjustment to the Upper Adjuster. I made it so that the clutch pedal sits lower then the brake pedal. It felt fine for a little bit, then it pumped right back up. I guess I don't know what I'm doing. I've yet had the time to bleed the slave cylinder like a stated before. Working 12 hour shifts on overtime sucks.

ok i was cutting my cat off yesterday day and i decided to top off my trans and transfer case fluid. I filled them up and drove about 10 miles then went to go get in it today and when i was driving it stuttered a little bit and from there on my clutch has been slipping, i don't think its the clutch disk itself because i just put in a ACT 2100 with a street sprung disk less than 5000 miles ago. The slipping is really bad, can even get the car to go over 10MPH. Is there any way fluid leaked internally on the trans and now the fluid is causing the clutch to slip on the flywheel....any ideas

i also got a rebuilt trans and fidanza lightweight flywheel

thanks guys

I had it on the lift, un screwed the two oil screws (trabs and transfercase). Then took kinda like a turket baster to fill the fluid in the trans and transfer case till it was coming out of the the hole where the oil screw is....i read thats the way to fill it

Im thinking the trans might be leaking internally putting fluid on the flywheel not letting the clutch to grab. cause ive blown a clutch before and i know you can at least still feather it and drive it around but this thing just bearly moves and wont go up hills at all :( Hopefully have time to open up the flywheel timing cover and see if theres any fluid tomorrow

How's your clutch adjustment? I think 2g's suffer from pump-up so maybe something is not letting the pressure release from the slave cylinder or maybe the release bearing is not working properly.

ok i went back today and rebled the clutch...still the same thing no fix....you can put the car in gear and let out the clutch with NO gas and it will move slowly amost as if it was a auto matic car idling in gear....anybody know the position of there slave cylinder when the clutch is out, looked like the fork and slave were about in the middle when the clutch WASNT being pressed, dont know if thats fine of if it should be more to the right side...its weird because usually a slave problem wouldnt let you put your car in gear but i dk what else could be the matter....no fluid on the clutch, rebled the system, im outta ideas besideds replacing the slave cylinder

i was also told to check if the clutch disc might have broke???? Has anyone heard of this happening....doesnt make too much sense to me on my car because it still moves it just doesnt seem like the disc is engaging all the way with the flywheel

i have a 90 gs turbo and i lost all pressure in the clutch last week. upon looking at the slave i noticed the boot was rotted off to i pulled the rod right out with no problem and when i stuck my finger in the slave i was covered in black oil stuff...so i replaced it. now i put it all back together and now i still have no pressure. the car when its in gear if i give it gas it will move on its own or die sometimes, but point being something is wrong. and it is hard to get into gear - if i dont slam it it grinds and wont go in. when i get it in it goes fine no slip. then other times it works fine like there is no issue but i still dont have a hard pedal. i dont know what to do becasue im told that i have a issue and its probably not my clutch becasue i have no slip and every gear works, but i dont know what to do next, was thinking the master- but i see no leaks so what do i do next im not loosing any fluids out of the master level stays the same but no pressure.....and the gears are only getting worse i think so i need a fix- anyone with any ideas or cheap parts (LOL) HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!
thanks guys

i assume i bled the system right i was told it bleeds just like a brake system, only thing i found weird with that is when i had my girl press it to the floor and i closed the bleeder it stayed on the floor.... not sure what that means? and how do you check a master ? and did i bleed it right?

yes the clutch system bleeds like the brake system but when you do the clutch system you want to use a piece of hose attach it to the bleeder submerge it in fluid in a bottle than bleed the system, it keeps ALL the air out, bleed it till you don't see or hear bubbles.

im feeling there might still be air hiding in the line
