Okay, folks, for some unknown reason, we're now getting three threads a week started about clutch malfunctions.
The usual cause is that the system hasn't been properly bled.

Have at it.

I put in a used, but in good condition master cylinder, to replace the one I had before with a broken rubber seal. I did not bleed any components, I simply took out the old one, and bolted the new one up. Then I proceeded to fill the reservoir with dot 3 brake fluid. Bubbles rose to the top of the reservoir, then I topped it off after the fluid ran down into the system. I looked at the clutch pedal and noticed it was still sitting on the floor. I tried pulling it up off the floor, but it only went up a few inches. Probably some adjusting that needs to be done with the rod is causing that. Anyway when I pull it up there is quite a bit of resistance, where when I let go the pedal just pulls right back to the floor. I've heard there is a vacuum going on, where with air in the system, it is just pulling that sucker right back. I tried pumping the crap out of the pedal with a friend opening the bleeder valve and I just shoot clutch fluid everywhere.. I Stop after about 50 pumps and put more fluid and keep going, but notice no improvement. Does anyone know what I need to do? Can anyone verify it is the air in the system causing my problem? Thank you,
Mike

have a friend pump the pedal 5 times and hold it down then open the bleeder and relese the fluid built up then have them pull the pedal back slowly and then open the bleader untill the fluid starts dripping large amounts then close it up tight. i had to do that to mine it just fills the rest of the line from the return of the master cylender. make shure u keep ## resivore full and the cap on while bleeding the lines.

also maybe the master cylender might have to be ajusted. it requires going behind the dash to ajust the push rod from the clutch pedal assembly. i own a 1990 eclipse gs-t and i have done a full restoration on it and i ferfected the clutch and its been allowing me to get low 10's out of it with no problems at all and the pedal never feels spongie or weak from doing it my way.

im having the same problem. is there a way to tell if its the master or the slave that isnt working properly? is it possible that i can rebuild them easily or what? thanks in an advance for the help.

I just replaced my master cylinder and its doing the same thing. I bled the cylinder before I installed it, then I tightened everything up and there was still no pressure. Should I take the line off and bleed it some more?

Your are suppose to bench press the master cylinder to get the air out of it.
but since the master cylinder is already in the car, you just need to fill the resoviour with brake fluid and just pump the clutch pedal like 100 times. all there is, is just air in your master cylinder. the air is trapped and thats y there is no brake fluid going through.

Most important thing is to make sure everythings bleed properly, this may sound simple but there are a couple tricks. TRE (WELCOME TO TRE   WE SPECIALIZE IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION REPAIR) has a good write up on the proper procedure to follow on their tech page. If the master was replaced, did you bench bleed it first?

If your sure its bleed properly & you don't have any leaks at the master or the slave (check under dash as well), did you adjust the master's rod properly (or at all?) The master cylinder rod needs to be adjusted with every clutch system related change. Jacks Transmission has a very good video posted on their site on how to do this properly.

i dont think i understand your question did you adjust the clutch pedal assembly it has been discussed on here over a million times.

dont blow up at me ha ha,when i first bought the car the pedal has always been rite off the floor, blew the motor rebuilt everything, motor, clutch, tranny.pedal is still off the floor, point blank second gear grind.im not getting a full throw off my clutch.my clutch is bleeding down, new components no leaks.i heard about linkage under the dash, trying to isolate the problem

New install? Installer probably left out the bellhousing bolt under the starter. Check all bellhousing bolts. Check for alignment dowels in place. Is this a new clutch disc? What brand? Some have been known to stick on the shaft.

Your are suppose to bench press the master cylinder to get the air out of it.
Really? Gotta be really strong for that? :p :D

Sorry, couldn't resist because the image of somebody laying down and bench pressing the master cylinder got stuck in my head. I do believe you mean bench bleed.

If you got your master cylinder from anywhere but the dealer you need to toss that POS in the trash and get a real OEM one. All of the aftermarket masters are junk and ruin synchros.

I've had this car for almost 2 months now, and it had a 2nd gear grind from the time I got it. Starting a few weeks ago, I started getting a slight grind into 5th when shifting fast, and then it started doing it in 3rd(ever so slightly) this is all completely random btw, I thought it was because I was being lazy with the clutch, but after paying attention to my shifting it still did it.

Today on the way home, I get off the freeway after about 30 minutes cruising at 60mph, and when I push in the clutch pedal, and pull it down into neutral, it acted like I didn't even use the clutch at all. And for the next 3 miles I was fighting it trying to get it into any gear at all. At one point I was completely dead in the water, but forced it into first and it lunged forward and died. Somehow I got it going again and made it home. The pedal feels completely normal, and I had my wife pump the clutch pedal while I looked around, and I felt the rubber clutch hose and it felt like fluid was going through it, but still no bueno.

I'm thinking this is something that has broken/come loose/etc inside the trans itself?

If it matters, I have a Spec S2 clutch and Fidanza flywheel.

I tried it again this morning, and I am COMPLETELY locked out of any gear. Like I mentioned before, it's like trying to get it into gear without the clutch, it just aint happening. Looks like I might be sending it to Shep sooner than I thought...

Definitely something inside the trans, the fork is moving very easily. The throwout bearing was squealing every now and then, not sure if that has anything to do with this...

I just recently replaced my clutch master cylinder and installed a ss clutch line. I am trying to bleed the system but cannot get any clutch pressure what so ever. The slave cylinder is also brand new but was installed a month prior. What could be the problem. I have pumped the pedal with the bleeder on the slave closed and opened. The brand new master cylinder is not taking in the fluid.
