I know the ecu will throw a code but does it also retartd timing? if so does anyone know how much?

It kills timing. The motor will run like a slug. Plug it back in and if you encounter phantom knock, you should consider replacing it.

My friend unplugged his knock sensor once. He tried telling us all it didn't do anything but hold the engine back. Less than a week later #4 rod went through the side of his block, presumably caused by an overly lean condition .Without the knock sensor he couldn't see the detonation and the ecu couldn't adjust timing. Plug it back in!

Exactly the knock sensor is what saves our motor from the mechanical advance. Ive heard of a mod where you weld over the hole on the 1g senser to make less sensitive. My mechanic did this and blew his motor in about 2 days. Funny because the thread had about 5 people saying it works great.
