I have done some research, I did the sparkplug test and ruled out a spun bearing. I have taken the valve cover off and inpected all the lifters which apear to be fine. My next thought is either motor/tranny mount broken or probably more likely a timing belt or waterpump issue.

I have an MP4 audio file of the engine starting, Here is the link:

Sorry you will have to download the file to listen to it but I couldn't find any other way to host or attach an mp4 file.

there was no warning or anything I drove the car from Cincinnati to Columbus (about 2 hrs guessing a little over 100 miles) stayed there for a couple days and drove home no problems. about 5 hrs later I get in my car and start it and it makes a clearly bad sound. I call my brother who I bought the car from he suggests its a lifter and to just drive it over and we'll check it out. 10.1 mile drive, the car heats up and the noise goes away for the most part not completely though. It's about 15 degrees here right now and I use a 5w30 oil let me know if there is anymore info you would need to troubleshoot this.

Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

nope balance shafts removed

Well I was able to look into this a little bit more and I can't find anything wrong. No broken mounts the head looks solid to me but I'm no professional. Did anyone think that the motor sounds like it's just a lifter issue? Later today I think I am going to drain the oil and drop the pan to check for metal shavings.
any ideas throw them my way I'm happy to give it a look, I'm just out of ideas of where to go from here.

I know I need a new Head gasket and some ARP studs, so I am thinking about pulling the head replacing those and taking the head to the machine shop, while I am in there I'll go ahead and replace the waterpump and timeing belt. As long as the machine shop says all is good on the head guess I'll just put it back togehter and hope that the noise is gone........

Drained the oil today to confirm, and its good news no metal shavings in the oil, I am putting in a heavier weght oil to see if the engine noise changes. Off to pick up a valve cover gasket so I can start her up again

Well looks like it's just a bad case of lifter tick. Put in a heavier weight oil and now the noise pretty much stopes except during the initial crank while the lifters don't have oil. On the plus side I was able to clean and paint the valve cover just a little prettier under the hood now LOL
