2G Turbo recommendations

I’ve been running a 16g turbo lately and it blew not too long ago now I’m wondering what other turbos I can run I don’t necessarily want to make a lot of power/speed I just want something that will make the car a little more fun than with a stock or Japanese turbo

Really all depends on your goals and how far your willing to go with it a big 16g, 20g would be a fun upgrade. Not really sure what your current setup is but with upgrading the turbo you also have to get supporting mods for whatever turbo you get like tuning software fuel support

I currently have a stock setup and like I said I’m not looking for a lot of hp

If you are not looking to upgrade anything else like the fuel system, you will have to stay with a stock turbo (T25 for a 2g) or something like the 16g that you had on stock wastegate pressures.

I was reading up on another thread and I saw a 14b turbo is an option I’m just wondering if they’re reliable at all

A 14b is a very reliable turbo. It is also a cheap turbo to find. If you want you could also just have your turbo rebuilt.

If you blew a 16g at stock pressure I'm gonna say it was probably a knock off 16g. If you're not wanting to upgrade anything you'll enjoy a 14b. It will spoil quicker and feel faster at lower boost levels.

Yea definitely go with a 14b if you don't want to upgrade anything else they are a very reliable turbo.

Another fun one for a mild build would be a t28, I don't see them as often but they do a good job for what they are. Though if you already have the install kit for 14b/16g/20g, you'd have to source an install kit. Which isn't hard, it's just another inconvience.

The t28 isn't as reliable as a mhi turbo plus they cost about 4 times what an mhi turbo would cost cause you don't see t28 for sale used Hardly ever. they aren't as easy to rebuild as an mhi turbo either. They're a good sleeper turbo but not worth the cost unless that was your main goal is to stay stock

I ran a "big" t28 for over 60k miles before I sold it to a local, who I think is still running it. I think your reliability idea is based on the fact that people overrun small turbos, it's pretty much fact, thus they die. As far as cost you can find them still for less than "4 times" the amount, though obviously you'd have to look. When you're in an emissions testing/inspection state it helps a lot to look stock, as well. As I first mentioned before your whole paragraph on why they aren't equal to a 14b(which is arguable) is that if he had the install kit already for a MHI, it wouldn't be quite as practical, so it's kind of a moot point...
Op, good luck finding a 14b, you might even find a local part out or CL listing. Just make sure the casting are correct and it is MHI.

I had a T28 on my first DSM. I liked it at the time as an easy upgrade from the T25 but it blew in about three years of low mileage DD at stock boost levels. I upgraded to an E3 16G and realized how poor of a turbo the T28 was by comparison. Reliability concerns aside (mine was clearly not robust but I am just one example) I can see no reason at all for choosing a T28 if you already have a 14b/16g install kit. At the time, a T28 was the same price as an E16g plus install kit. These days the price is about even, but the MHI turbos are much more fun and, from my personal experience, last much longer than the modified Garrett.

I also gained quite a bit in fuel economy after jumping over to the 16g, but for the 14b the effect would be less pronounced. I'm very much a Garrett guy, but my vote is definitely 14b.

@Vegas smith, and the hot side will be cracked to hell. All joking aside, you should definitely be careful of these 20 year old hotsides. A bet @JusMX141 might just have one, or ten, on hand.

If the hot side is bad You can buy a new hot side on Ebay for just over 100 bucks and they work rather well. Pick up a used 14b for around 100 bucks by a new housing and have a fun reliable turbo for just over 200 bucks. I picked up a small 16g 2 years ago for 125 bucks and bought a new hot side and haven't had any issues. turbo is still going strong with new owner

^ Ive actually heard they're decent, like %60 of the time, they work all the time, . But yeah, I've heard few complaints. Id be more worried about chipped wheels or a bent shaft, ie a full new cartridge when buying a turbo. Regardless, it could cost more than $200 for a non rebuilt, 20 year old turbo, that may last forever or not.
Btw, my second AWD DSM originally had a 7cm 14b that I loved. I just want the op to know there are more than a few small turbo upgrades with DSM flanges.

The DSM TB2578 (T28) is already the largest-available wheelset found in the Garrett T2 platform from the factory....meaning even at stock boost levels it's testing the strengths of the TB25 bearing housing design every time it makes positive manifold pressure.

The comparable MHI Small 16G on the other hand, comes with one of the smallest wheelsets found in the TD05/06 platform...so durability of the 16G is inherently better than the T28. If you don't need a stock-fitment turbo for a 2G, it's best to go with the 16G and never look back. For reinforcement of this:

I have probably two-dozen 14B cores here, none of which have a completely crack-free turbine housing. I mainly keep them around for parts or to rebuild if someone needs an inexpensive but reliable replacement for a blown knockoff 16G (using the customer's existing Chinese 7cm2 turbine housing and actuator after all of the issues with those are addressed).
