hello all, tearing down my car, turbo wasnt making boost, housing was all cracked to hell, so was manifold. got new 1g mani (hope it doesnt crack soon) and a used 14b in great shape for cheap, and noticed wheels in housings looked different in teh two turbos. tore it down some (the old busted one) and seen that the moron i bought car from actually put the exhaust wheen in the compressor side, and vice versa! what the hell kind of moron could do this? is this even possible?? good thing i wasnt running it on that setup for too long, would blow something else up. but things are giong back together slowly, not enough funding, and need new turbo bolts...i have 3 somewhat good ones, and missing the 4th good one...should just buy new ones. either stockers (which snapped in old turbo manifold) or arp chromemoly.

It's not possible. The 14B compressor inducer is smaller than the TD05H turbine exducer, so the compressor housing would never fit on, the turbine seal collar is too big to fit where the compressor backplate is....Et cetera, Et cetera.

As for your comment about the moron, you'd be surprised what kind of people exist in this world.

You're probably looking at two different turbos and dont even know it... Oh and get OEM bolts with OEM turbo washers, dont use the ARPs for turbo bolts.

yeah should have changed to venting. its just a screwed up turbo is all...really screwed up with chewed wheels...

deleted the one that had more going for it, and more info...and not the useless thread...LOL its cool.

thinking of getting 14g wheel, rebuild kit, and tdo5h turbine (there is a combo with small 16g wheel on ebay for 99 bucks) with stock housing and 34mm flapper. i know, why put more money into something, right? i want to learn how to rebuild turbos and make my own hybrid instead of BUYING one.

and this is an awesome vfaq i found...great stuff here http://www.austarion.com/tech/turbo.pdf

You mean a 14B wheel I take it, unless you're thinking of getting the 16G combo on eBay and having your compressor cover and center housing machined to match. That's a pretty good idea for the money you'll spend.

I used that vfaq article to rebuild my first Big 16G almost 7 years ago; I recently made a tech article on this site with better (clearer) pics:

no, its a TD05H 14b, its cracked to he11. let me go get a pic. i think i can get a used tdo5h turbine housing for 25 shipped off here. are they used on 13b/g variants, i was thinking that was the td04.

good thing i got a new one and new turbo both for under 100 bucks. just have to get gaskets, turbo bolts and slap it all together then take it for a drive ;)

yeah its trashed. its stripped down to head right now, no exhaust, down pipe is hanging. whats the best gaskets for this? i seen felpros for 25 bucks, but i hear the copper crush style from ffwd is way better (only a little more money too) and last a long time.

oh and here is the turbo...14b!

No wonder the turbine inducer tips are fuct- the housing and manifold have been shredding themselves for quite some time.

Turbines like that make me question the importance of perfect balance. Here we have a turbo with DEFINITE inconsistent blade damage with zero shaft play, yet there are some folks that believe if the wheels aren't clocked 100% perfect during reassembly that any turbo will destroy itself immediately. I know what I believe. :tease:

Otherwise the turbo's clean- I'd buy a new TD05H turbine, a Kamak Dynamics rebuild kit, one of those knockoff 7cm housings from eBay, and I'd do one of my MHI/Holset actuator mods to allow that 14B to make as much boost as possible.

well, you know that center piece in the middle of the exhaust outlet? yeah the one that acts as divider to keep stream right down to turbo? missing on the one i pulled off car...so im sure that its wedged back in the cat...it went through the turbine housing, marring the wheel, but the shaft totally seems fine. i wholly agree rebuilding it, but as cheaply as possible. the knockoff 7cm housing should be ok right? i have a seller selling genuine 7cm nickel content housing for 160 shipped, its brand new im told, still dont have pics. so with that in mind, new turbine shaft (hope it fits center section) and 16g wheel (small) and a little machining on the inlet will be just fine huh? so for around, what...300 bucks i can get this thing together? maybe 350. make a little more flow and be cheaper than new turbo. if i went with knockoff housing that would put me under 300 for an ebay knockoff turbo pretty much...also, the part that made a griding sound on the turbo is the turbine hitting the heat shield behind it, other than that it spins freely and quite, no in/out and very minute side to side play on shaft.
