trouble installing main seal

Im in the process on installing a new clutch but since I had the trans out I thought it would be a good idea to replace the rear main seal. I had no problem removing the seal from the case but now I cant get the new seal in. Is there any tricks to it?

Use the old seal and press it against the new seal, while tapping it in with a rubber mallet

Using it as a guide ensures it wont get damaged in the process, while going in evenly

I like to lay a block of wood across the seal while tapping it with a hammer. It just seems to help get it going in straight and also helps get it started easier.

I used the old seal as a guide while using a piece of wood on top and it worked can't believe i didn't think of this earlier. thanks for the quick response guys.

Check on vfaq, they have a good guide for it. Apparently the power steering pulley makes a good press for it since its the same size as hte seal but I've never changed mine, thats just whats on vfaq
