Alright guys here is the low down.
My car has been running very weird lately. I have a TRE transmission that came with the car when I bought it so I don't know the original condition of it. The trans will pop out of 5th gear, will grind into first gear if not slowed way down, makes weird noises from inside the trans, and when the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor I cannot shift I must back out about an inch. I am thinking that my trans is junk.
I have tried to solve this issue by:
- Bleeding the clutch multiple times to adjust the clutch pedal. Nothing.
- We thought the shifter linkages may have been too tight cause the car to pop out of place. So we loosened them. Nothing.
- When the car is in idle the noise is even louder than when in gear.
I have run out of ideas to try and am ready to store the car for the winter, pull the trans, and have it ready to be rebuilt for the spring. If anyone has any ideas or thought they would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Zac

I was sure hoping it wasn't but it will give me a project to do over the winter season. Now comes the question. Rebuild or buy new? If I buy new I don't think I need a staged trans since my GS-T won't be hitting more than 350 HP.
Thanks!
Zac

By new I meant just get a trans from someone else. I am a college student and am short on funds at the moment.
Thanks for your input!

Well i wouldn't just replace the transmission because you think its no good...

check your cable adjustment first... if that doesn't solve anything than you should try draining out the transmission fluid, putting it in a clear container and holding it up to the light. If you see any big metal shavings or pieces of metal in there than i would probably just replace the transmission. if you don't see anything to bad i would try flushing it out and putting in some gm syncromesh fluid. It did wonders for my one of my transmissions in the past

as for the noise... how do you know its not coming from the throw out bearing or something else?

also i've had a fully rebuild tranny that diden't like to go into 1st gear unless you were slowed right down... and my 2007 cobalt ss does the same thing. i think most cars don't like to shift into 1st gear unless your doing somewhere under 20km/h

seems dumb to me to replace the transmission without doing the simple checks first... if it was my trans I would tear it right down to find the actual problem before even thinking about replacing it. but thats my

but if you do end up going the route of just replacing it i would recommend trying to find one from someone you know so you know its going to work instead of going to the scrap yard (never know what your getting)

anyways, thats my .02

I would say that its pretty far gone. But i see that your in Wisconsin, so i would call tim zimmer for a rebuild that you wont be disappointed with.

Tim Zimmer does great work. I have heard no bad reviews from him. I will talk to him either on the forums or over the phone and work something out.
Thanks for all the help guys!

Since you said you were low in funds, what I would do is pull out the whole tranny, and take a real close look at it. By what you are telling me, im guessing your synchro's are bad...like mentioned above look at your transmission oil, if you see any metal shavings look at where they could've came from...most cars i've driven will don't want to go into 1st unless you're going really slow, i personally don't shift down to 1st unless i'm in a complete stop

That is what I have been doing. As my car sits it is in a campus parking lot, since i'm in college. I will be towing the car home tonight and will hopefully be able to pull the trans out and take a look at it to determine the culprit.
Thanks!
