So I recently picked up a 1998 eagle talon tsi awd with 150,000km for 6000$. I’ve only been driving the car for about a week max and had some concerns.

#1. Had a chirping/whirring sound from transmission area only in neutral but not consistently. Noise would completely disappear when I took away the free play on the top of the clutch pedal. Had concerns of input shaft bearing. Brought to shop to listen, said sounded weird, checked clutch fluid BONE DRY. Bled clutch replaced fluid, no more noise… For now.

#2. 1st gear popout. Already done some reading. Happens about 1/8th of the time. My question would be what is the next step. All other gears seem fine, can I just replace 1st gear. How hard is the job. Or is everything on its way out.

#3. Not springy at top of clutch. Shifts fine. Doesn’t really bother me. Just wondering what it would be.

If first gear pops there could be play on the intermediate shaft. That's where the 1/2 hub and sleeve resides. It is what it is. Only way to know is take it apart and find out. I can tell you I've seen dozens of trans down for a clutch and you grab the input shaft and there is 50thou play or worse. So what else is worn? Owners almost always decline repairs. And dsm trans are unreliable.....uh huh. Its just a machine. Stuff wears out.
 
It is what it is LOL. Should I just buy 1/2 hub and sleeve or a whole kit? I have zero experience doing that type of thing. Luckily I have my civic as a backup still so I could take my time.

The play diesnt come from that. Play is from bad bearing. Hub and sleeve may be bad also. You wont know what it is until you tear it apart.
