Had to take the trans out again and upgrade the clutch. Figured while it was out, I should replace the leaking seal on the shift selector shaft.
My question is, can the trans be split at this point, or does it have to come completely apart starting from the back side?
I have removed all the bolts but something near the shift selector seems to be stopping me from pulling it apart.

Well poo. I was hoping I could pop that side off real quick. I should have asked before trying...
The seal is external but getting the end of the shift mechanism off is next to impossible from what I read. There is a roll pin that people have a very hard time with.

Roll pins don’t always come out easy, but most times i get them with a punch and hammer. If they’re seized i would try heat first since you’re replacing the seal anyway, then if that doesn’t work you could always drill it out. Just make sure you’re able to find a new pin before drilling, and use a scrap piece of steel to figure out the right size drill bit to use for the new pin so you don’t oversize the hole too far.

I tried a punch and a hammer I have nicknamed mini Thor. Wasnt able to get it to move. Was afraid of damaging the shaft so I stopped. Need to find some sort of press tool that wont put so much force on the shaft itself.

Heat is a good idea! Not sure why that never occurred to me. Drilling might also work. I need to get some quality bits...

Ill give it another go tomorrow.

Make sure that your knocking it out from the small taper side if its a tapered lock pin, it should only come out and go in one way.

If you have an air hammer with a sharp blow, it will zip them right out.

The way you tried to disassemble the trans is the way Hondas and Mopars typically come apart. Not for a turbo DSM with end nuts.

I borrowed a small tool from a friend that's actually for taking the pins out of motorcycle chains. It has a few different sizes. Going to give that a shot.

I sadly don't have an air hammer anymore. Had one about 10 years ago for an old job and never used it. Ended up throwing it out when I got a new toolbox.

I had a feeling it wouldn't come apart that way, but I had to give it a shot. Would have saved SO much time.
