Transmission shift selector seal

Ok so I tried to search this but I think I am calling it the wrong thing so. Ok I am working on a stealth for a buddy of mine and the seal for the shaft that selects the gear is leaking quite bad he wants me to change it (it looks nearly identical to a 1g selector). Can I change it with the transmission in the car or does the transmission have to torn apart?

Normally you need to pull the box apart to get the selector shaft out to change that seal.
Fantastic design.... NOT!
