So I wanted to get some opinions on this weird problem I'm having with my gf's 92 Celica GT.

I had the front suspension apart doing the swaybar links and balljoints and I noticed that the inner CV joint on the driver's side was wobbly... I could move it up and down a quarter of an inch or so.

I thought it was just maybe not snapped in all the way, but it will not go any further. I proved this by putting some grease on the end of the axel and pushing it up against the post that runs through the differential. The grease transferred to the post in the diff so I know that it won't go in any further.

I can see that the seal is badly ovalized, and I was wondering if you guys think that the seal would be responsible for holding the axel centered. It feels like it's made of metal with rubber around it. The splines show no signs of wear which is weird considering it must have been like this since we got the car. I ordered a new seal and I'm going to try that, otherwise maybe someone put the wrong axle in the car at some point.

Any thoughts/comments are muchly appreciated!!

Ya, but it feels solid in there. I can't get it to move with the axle out. Since the seal was only about 15 bucks, I'm going to try that first and see what happens.

Sounds like the diff bearings are bad in the trans.

+1 or the sun gears in the diff are very loose and about to break and blow through the case which is common with FWD cars. Either way, the diff needs to be pulled and looked at. You may have saved the trans from a catastrophic failure by catching it and it is very likely salvageable.

Uggg thats not what I wanted to hear LOL. Especially from you Jack! I got the seal today and I'm gonna just give it a try first, but if it's still loose after that I might take it to a transmission shop to have them take a look at it.

I only paid 500 bucks for the car so I really don't want to spend a fortune on a tranny rebuild :(

Do you think there's any way of troubleshooting without taking the transmission out?
