Hey everyone Ive recently (last 48 hours) developed a very strange transmission issue. (this is in my '92 tsi awd, recently built motor and trans)

Symptoms:
-Very soft pedal (all hydrolic components are new and no fluid is leaking)
- It idles fine until I push in the clutch, then it sounds like my Throwout bearing is rattling and it idles poorly
-it is very hard to engage any gears (but still could be driven)
- when starting it turns over slower than usual.
- I just added gm synchromesh to my tranny a few days before this issue.
- when revving the engine I briefly notice an odd noise like paper tearing coming from around the TB area on the rev down
-The clutch in it currently slips at wot

Needless to say I am very concerned about what this issue is and would like to resolve it one way or another. If any more info in needed I would be happy to oblige.

Thanks,
-Eric

Sorry to hear about these problems, let try and figure it out.

Soft pedal can be that there is air in your hydralic cltuch system. Have you bled the system yet?

That noise that develops when you push the clutch in can be from a bad Throwout bearing. Whirling, grating grinding noise are all symptoms of this.

If its hard to get into gear it can be several problems: It can be a problem with your linkage cable, synchonizer sleeves or hubs are damaged, something is wrong with your shift rails or or fork. Since it is affecting all gears, I say it might be the linkage and or the shift assembly, they need to be rebuilt on high mileage cars.

Clutch slipping at WOT means you have a worn clutch surface and/or flywheel pressure plate surface needs to be resurfaced. It can also be cause by other problems: warped plate, weak or broken diaphragm springs, oil/fluid soaked disk, TOB is faulty.

Dude you've got so many issues I highly doubt they're all related. First thing if you're clutch is slipping then you need to pull the trans. While you're in there you can check your throw-out bearing. After you wrap that up you can bleed and adjust the clutch. Your problems should be gone after all that. Either way, the trans is going to have to be pulled, so stop asking questions and start working.

Damn... Harsh haha. But yeah i already have the car in the air and have the xfer-case, driveshaft, and exhaust off, also a spec clutch sitting on my workbench. So id like to think i worked some this afternoon...

On a side note is there a difefrence between awd and fwd tobs? Guy at autozone said their were two part numbers when i went to order an oem one, after i tossed the spec one..

If you're trying to get an oe bearing then just call mitsu and give them your vin # to be sure you get the right part.

Stay away from VatoZone. Go to Oreillys or Advance at least. Or go OEM for a quality part.
