transfer case?

so i just bought a 1g.. first 800 miles pulled the motor.. installing everything now and on the very top of my tcase theres a hole that someone wedged a top of a gear fluid cap in... what is this hole? a vent? i know its not the fill or drain hole.. what should i do to plug this hole up? i have no idea what its for the only thing i can think is that its a breather... thanks

It is a vent hole. It is supposed to have a rubber vent in it. It likely fell out and they just stuck something to plug the hole. You can get them from the dealer for a couple bucks.
