Transfer Case...

Ok, I have searched like crazy with conflicting results. I discovered that my transfer case has quite a bit of play in it. It clunks into drive and reverse and sometimes when downshifting to first when slowing down. (auto tranny) I jacked up the back wheel and when I turn the wheel back and forth the drive shaft moves along with it so I know it is the transfer case. U joints are all solid.

When I first got the car, the transfer case was dry, so I filled it. The last time I drained its fluid it looked like glitter. I know that it is from leaking transfer case fluid.

Anyways, to my point of this post. I went to Chrysler several months ago and they refused to look at the car because the recall was performed about 13 years ago. I called the Chrysler number and they said that they will not fix it because it had already been in for the recall.

What do I do now? I know that a safety recall is for the lifetime of the car but that can be interpreted two ways. Lifetime to have it done, parts warrantied for lifetime no matter what. There is also no real proof that they "fixed" anything since I am displaying the very symptoms described in the recall notice and they don't keep records of what they do in the shop.

Maybe someone with experience getting their transfer case fixed for a second time will be able to help me out.

You can buy a good used one for around $100 if you do a little digging. That would be my solution.

When I first got the car, the transfer case was dry, so I filled it. The last time I drained its fluid it looked like glitter. I know that it is from leaking transfer case fluid.

Holy, metal shaving Batman . The glitter you saw in the fluid was most likely metal shaving. What brand of fluid you use to fill the tc up? Redline, Royal Purple, cheap stuff? I would flush it out and fill it up with a better fluid (if you used and cheap stuff) and see if it helps. Last resort, find another one and replace it to see if it solves your problem. And to swap it out is not all that hard either. Drain the fluid, remove the five 17mm bolts, pry it off the tranny & slide it off the driveshaft and then reverse to install it. Good luck.

I'm just using valvoline gear oil in it. Today I think I noticed a wobbling gear type of noise on the highway coming from the transfer case area. I will look for a used transfer case but dsms in my area are non existent.

I will try to call Chrysler again and threaten to sue them because they are neglecting the safety recall and I could be injured or killed as a result of it.

Well good luck with that, another thing your going to want to look into is whether or not the yoke that connects the prop shaft to the TC is the culprit for your leak. If so, get a recall repair kit from ExtremePSI and swap it if it hasnt been already.
