Calgary,
My transfer case went out.
Im replacing it and its not working to good.
Not too long ago i had to replace the clutch so i had to get the transfer case out in order to get the tranny off. I remember it being really easy, just sliding in.
But now i bought another one and it fits in the back commin from the rear wheels but i wont fit into the spline comming from the tranny.
Are there two different kinds? My car is a 91 and im using a 90 t-case...

Thanks guys

you know that the transfer case is a recall.. you might want to take it down to the dealer so they can put a new one in for free. Can't get much easier then that.

well i had to get my car towed to my house
so i cant just drive it down tehre.

do they replace the whole thing??

yeah if it locked up on you they will give you a brand new one and put it on. Call them on the phone. they should be able to arrange a tow to their service garage. might as well have them check for any other recalls while its down there as well. Mines at the dealer right now getting ball joints, gas tank, and transfer case done. all free of charge.

idfferent tcases have different numbers of splines

the tcase number of splines must match your trans

21,22,23 are the options

ya gotta count!

If the splines matc, you'll just have fight it a little to get it on. I've had to do tat countless times. just wiggle it until it goes on.

But as was pointed out, you can't really beat having the dealership give you and install a brand new one is hard to beat :D

ok so theres not a standard for it?
like 91 are 23
90 are 21
..
damn.. stuff is confusing.. why couldnt they just make it all the same!!
ok well im getting another one hopefully this one will fit and i can be on my way to the beach
.. thats where i was suppose to go  .. but.. friggin dms:thumbdown ...
and
theres recalls on all those parts??
i called the dude at mitsubishi and he was friggin rude..
i gave him my vin number and he said he'd call back
... that was 5 hours ago..
once i get it up and running, ill take it down tehre and ill let em do whatever the crap.

thanks for ur guys help..

I had to change the transfer case on mine and I got the wrong spline count on the replacement. I have a 90 trans and transfer case (22 spline) which cracked in half after a driveshaft (propeller shaft) bearing failure and I ordered a used transfer case to replace. I ended up getting the wrong one (a 23 spline) and it didn't fit (obviously). I ended up swaping the drive bevel assembly from my old transfer case to the new one. Basically changing new replacement transf case from a 23 spline case to a 22 spline. Works just fine. Just make sure the oil seals are staright when you put your old drive assembly in the new housing.

well
ive been counting damn teeth for like the last 30 min
i got 3 t-cases
my broken one ( when u sake the thing... it rattles inside LOL) with 22

and two used ones.. with a 23

so.. damn it!

beach is still waiting for me
and they said the surf was gonna be good

why cant things be just a littlel easier sometimes?

If you have 3 t-cases lying around, you should be able to make one good one out of them. If you don't know if you have a 22 or 23 spline trans, just try fitting them on. Without the driveshaft attached, it should be too difficult to test fit. when you are ready to install everything, use a jack under the t-case to help you. Stuff rattling around means messed up bearings in the subassembly - means bevel gear is toast. I had one like that abd just cleaned it up, installed correct fitting bevel gear, and changed the fluid after a few days. It's only 5 bolts on the tramsfer cover to get to, open them up!!! Just be sure not to mess up the gaskets or lose the round spring inside the gasket (you'll see). Just try to make the best transfer case with the 3 you have.

thanks for the info
it does sound like the best option
but the 2 23 teeth ones are not mine
i just bought one .. and then i went back to the guy and he gave me another 23 teeth one.

damn it..
i was suppose to go to orientation for school..

does anybody have a 22 teeth t-case in the SO CAL area???

didi you open up the 22 spline t-case and check the bevel gear assembly? If it's good, swap it into one of the 23 spline cases. My current set up is a 22 spline bev gear in a 23 housing. Works great. Fill it up with cheapy fluid, dump out after a day or two (just to get some gunk out) and replace with the good stuff. I use mobil 1.

My buddy did the same thing. He ended up getting some play tho with the gears. Works fine but i sure as hell wouldnt launch it :talon:

you saying play when rolling on and off the throttle?

well im just thinking about it cause when i bought my latest car...it had absolutely no drivetrain play whatsoever....BUT something was locked up... (i thought it was the rear)

now after 5-6 days of driving it - that something that was locked up broke loose with a pop in a parking lot

after that everything in the drivetrain felt great except that the drivetrain now has play in it that it did not have before that incident

Hi, Sorry to jack the thread a little bit, i just tore my t-case apart on my 2g. It was rebuilt by a shop and failed after 8k miles. The three pieces that make up the t-case were reassembled with RTV between them.. are there supposed to be gaskets between t-case sections? is this my problem for the original leak? Or is RTV sealant ok?
thanks

Swap out the transmission output shaft for a 23 spline one. YOU WANT a 23 spline transfercase...

Unless you have the shop manual an can follow the directions, shim and mark gears properly for a good wear pattern so they wont break dont open the tcase...

Swapping the shaft is easy and hard to screw up in comparison.

when i had mine into the dealer the reassembled it with a goup (dark grey) i would think the rtv would be fine.

Ok, well i feel a little better now about the RTV.

Has anyone used a gasket instead or found some already in the t-case?
