I really didn't want to mess with the timing belt but it looks like I will have to. I have the 1g engine mount installed (oops!) so I need to put the 2g mount in. I've read the VFAQ over a few times and this is going to be a process (and one that needs very special attention). Does anyone have any hints or tips that weren't mentioned in the VFAQ?

Thanks,
Steve

Are you asking how to do the engine mount mod? Or the timing belt?

Either way, if youre doing the timing belt, keep the 1g mount on to do the belt, seeing as the screw in hydraulic tensioner tool will not fit through the 2g mount....then put the modified 2g mount on.

The magnus guide shows details on the mount modification...you basically just cut it so it fits over the water pump...take a chunk outta the top left of it.

No I know how to do both, I'm asking if I can swap the mounts out with the belt on. Which from what you said it sounds like I can. I thought I had to put the 2g mount on before I did the belt.

So I can swap out the mounts with the belt still on?

Thanks for the reply! :dsm:

Yes, that is the way it should be done. You cant do the timing belt properly without the 1g mount being on the 1g engine....so you are forced to put the 2g mount on last.

I'm so glad to hear that... LOL. I thought I was going to have to do the timing belt all over again.

Can someone get better pictures than VFAQ? Or maybe a drawing of what it looks like? The engine isn't at my house so I can't look at it. I really don't want to have to reinstall the timing belt. When I looked at it though it looked like it wouldn't come off without taking the belt off.

You cant have the belt on when switching the mounts out, The tensioner arm bolts to the mount.

Steve, you are going to need to re-push-in the hydraulic tensioner with your tool, using the 1g mount you already have on... then:

Put a pin or whatever in the hydraulic tensioner once its completely pushed in, then switch the mounts out...keep the 1g tensioner arm and use the 2g mount. Then once you put the new modified mount on, and reconnect the tensioner arm...then pull out the pin off the hydraulic tensioner and you're done.

I don't know about you, but that spells disaster to me. You're already there, why not do it the right way? And if you are going to take the shortcut, for your sake, make sure you check the gap tolerances before you fire her up.

Can you do the timing belt correctly with the 2g mount installed first? I don't want to take it apart and then find out I can't even use the 2g mount to do the belt. I'd much rather just do the "short cut" if it's necessary the first time. I need some more peoples input.

Nick, you did the swap yourself right? You used the method you described? The car is running?

Blacknspoolin' and Silver Eclipse did you do the swap yourselves? How did you do the belt?

Ive reread my post, and Im being a bit misleading.

To answer, no, you cant do it correctly with the 2g mount installed. My 6bolt swap is timed and appears fine, havent started it up yet, but the timing is dead on. Me and BISHILVR did mine like this:

WITH THE 1G MOUNT ATTACHED

Slide the tensioning tool through the mount, tensioned the H.T., and put a pin through it to hold in place.

Pulled off the 1G mount, put on the modified 2g mount, put on the 1g tensioner arm.

Put the two pulleys on, torqued the right one.

Put the belt on, using the pulley tool (the one with the two pins) torqued the left pulley so the belt had the correct tension.

Took the pin out of the H.T, after 20 min it re-tensions itself.

----

The problem is that the tool you use to tension the H.T. doesnt fit through the 2g mount and 1g cover correctly... so you have to use the 1g mount, get the H.T. in place, then put the 2g on.

So I am going to have to take the belt off then. How much is that tool or w/e? I followed the link from vfaq, is there anywhere else I can pick it up?

Thanks for all of the help, I really appreciate it.

spxmiller.com sells the two timing tools for about 30 bucks a set. Search around for the part numbers and call the order in.

Yeah I emailed them already. I just didn't know the price, thanks!

When i did my swap, I put the mount and tensioner arm on first, then the belt. The only tool I used was the tool for the pully. Ive never had the belt slip once, the aftermarket pulley did (oops) when missed a gear, but not the belt.
