NORTHAMPTON,
 I left work last night and my engine started making a ticky noise that increased as the RPM increased. I had this happen before, usually for a minute or tow when I started my car up on a cold morning, or if I was sitting at idle in traffic for a long period of time, it would tick for a few seconds then go away. Well, my car is still ticking today and it wont go away. My oil level is right on. I dont know if it is a valve or a lifter or anything else. I was told that injectors sometimes tick, but these are new 550s from BR. It dosnt get any louder when I take off the oil cap, and its hard to pin point where it is coming from. This is my 3rd dsm and they all did it at one point or another, but not for this long. Does anyone have any suggestions how to make it go away. My oil pressure is fine as well if that matters. Thanks for the space.

Get an actual mitsu oil filter on your car, the one specified to be on there by mitsu, and you will prolly notice it will help. It has something to do with the oil pressure, or something, I am not sure how it works, but I have cured many people's lifter ticks this way at my shop.

What is the filter that I should use and do I have to get it from a dealer. Also, I dont use synthetic because I heard if you dont use it from the beginning it makes your seals leak because of the composition in, but my uncle who is a chrystler mechanic told me that Amzoil does not have the chemical in it that cause the seals to leak. Does anyone out there use Amzoil and if so how was your experience with it.

If I were you, I would run Mobile 1 in it, and I have found that most oil places around where I live carry the mitsu brand. If all else fails, go to a dealer. You might even try car places, Pep Boys, AutoZone, OReily's and all that.

I have been told by a few people that if you dont run mobile 1 from the start it can cause your main seal to leak. I will be pulling my engine out in May to paint my car and install my evoIII 16g/evoIII mani, clutch, FMIC, etc. There is a really good machinst in my area who I had to head work before, I just dont wanna mess around until then. I will try the oil filter I guess and that royal purple although I don't elieve in quick fix solutions, but what am I to do. Someone emaile dme and told me to put some tranny fluid in my gas and that will help???? Thanks for the replies, I would be lost without the forums. Any more help please feel free to post. Thanks.

Auto tranny fluid in your GAS tank???!?!? no no no, there is a talon digest article that tells you to use auto tranny fluid mixed with some other stuff and put it in the motor...I for one don't recommend it.

There is a noted Mitsu shop where I live and the owner once told me to be sure to change my oil more frequently to prevent that ticking sound. I've been changing "on time" at 3000 miles with Mobil and its all good now. BTW I just recently (within a year) started using Mobil.

I just put a down payment on a 1993 TSi AWD ($1500) and it ticks also I am going to go pick it up in a week but would i be better off cleaning the lifters or buying new ones (probably new ones). If i buy new ones older 4g63 lifters are hard to come buy could i get the lifters for a EVO 8 and put those in?

Could be an exhaust leak too. You may not think so, but an exhaust leak can make a really loud ass ticking sound, very similar to a bad lifter.

thanks much, i'll make sure to check that out when i go up to get it, it's still worth it, i mean a '93 TSi AWD w/ 69k on it for $1500 whetther it has a lifter tic or exhaust leak it will be fixed thanks again

but if it is the lifters will the EVO 8 lifters work

i have the continuous tick on my 96 gst n its annoying but when i took off the heat sheild on the damn manifold i found that the idiot owner that i bought it from drilled a whole in the damn thing an put a bolt in it to hold the cover on an as it turns it leaks pressure but i noticed the gasket for the manifold - head is leakin on the #3 cyl would this be making my car tick cause one day it wont an the next it will i dont get it i am already runin mobil 1 synthetic wit a fram filter n shit

I've seen that happen quite often, both at work, and on my car. Sometimes I'm in such a hurry and forget to tighten things...

I just wanted to post an update about my lifter tick. I bought some OEM oil filters at teh Mitsubishi dealer, then I headed over to Autozone to grab some mobil 1 synthetic, and I picked up a mobil 1 filter just in case. The OEM filters I got hit my 3" DP, so I used teh mobil 1 filter. After about 15 miles of driving, the annoying ticking noise went to a slight murmer, and then to nothing at all. When I start the car, the ticking begins again, but soon after goes away. I am guessing at this point I should be happy that the ticking is gone but also face the fact that I will need rivised lifters, but I just changed my water pump 3 weeks ago and I am not all about changing lifters right now, but I will in spring. A big thanks to everyone who offered their opinion, I needed a reason to switch to synthetic and I highly recomend mobil 1, if it can make the tick go away it must be doing something right. I am going to enjoy the rest of the day with my window down listening to the wonderful sound of my BOV :D

Just wanted to finish up the story here. The tick came back so I decided to call my uncle for help. My uncle is a Chrystler mechanic and has been for quite some time, long before the first talon rolled off the asembly line. I got the scoop from him. First I asked him about the OEM filter taking away the lifter tap. He told me this will only work if the tap occured when you first start your car and if the tick goes away in 30 seconds or so after starting it. The OEM filter has an anti-drain back system in it which dosnt allow the lifters to bleed out over a period of time, which makes them tick until the pump back up. He told me to put "Liftermedic" in my engine and that should cleasr it up. He told me they use it in the shop and he has had 100% fix rate with it. Well, it did not fix mine. When we pulled my valve cover, we pushed the roller/lifter with a screw driver, and found that two exhaust lifters had fully collapsed. He told me that if I tried the liftermedic the first day it got the tick, it should have cleared it up, but I waited like 9. Anyway, we compressed the spring with a screwdriver, removed the roller and swapped the lifters with ones from a head I had until I get around to ordering revised ones, and we tested them to make sure they help pressure. In the end, it was about a half an hour job to fix and you can save some money if you can get away doing it yourself, after seeing how he did it it isnt really that hard. Hope that helps anyone else out there in ticky ticky land.

i got a tick too and posted a question about it then saw this post. i took the oil cap off the ticking wasnt any louder so maby its an exhaust leak because my dp gasket( the 1 that goes between the dp and ehaust mani) was in poor shape when i put it back on and i didnt use a gasket on the dp and exhaust pipe. could that be my ticking?

My tick didnt get any louder when I took the cap off either. You can try this. Get a long, thick flathead screw driver and place the flathead on the valve cover roughly above there the lifters are. Go along all of the lifters, both intake and exhaust. While doing this, place your ear on the plastic handle and listen for changes in loudness. My uncle showed me this and he pin pointed the lifters that were most likely the problem, and when we pulled the cover off sure enough it was them. He also checked my fuel rail and my exhaust mani with the same method prior to taking off teh cover. It is probably a lifter. I would try that valvemedic first, it is made by GUNK and comes in a yellow bottle, it is less than 2 bucks at car quest and is designed to stay in your engine. If not, pull your valve cover and check to see if the lifters are pumped up, make sure the cam lobe isnt holding it down, give it a quick crank over to check all of them.

As far as I know I have the stock lifters and they tick but only when car is cold and then shut up.All injectors will tick too. Some people confuse lifter tick with injector tick.

I was planning on some revised lifters. But what are hla lifters..is that the revised ones. The revised ones I have seen look like they have a huge oil oil so should work much better thant the stock ones.

I had some lying around from an old car I had. I was gonna order new ones but after putting that valvemedic in my engine and replaced teh 2 lifters it sounds better than it ever has.

gsx_tuner mentioned that they are 12 bux a pop at OReily's. And there is what, 16 of them? I myself would probably just have my uncle order them with his discount.

Sorry I couldnt help any, hopefully someone will make a post.
