NORTHAMPTON,
 I left work last night and my engine started making a ticky noise that increased as the RPM increased. I had this happen before, usually for a minute or tow when I started my car up on a cold morning, or if I was sitting at idle in traffic for a long period of time, it would tick for a few seconds then go away. Well, my car is still ticking today and it wont go away. My oil level is right on. I dont know if it is a valve or a lifter or anything else. I was told that injectors sometimes tick, but these are new 550s from BR. It dosnt get any louder when I take off the oil cap, and its hard to pin point where it is coming from. This is my 3rd dsm and they all did it at one point or another, but not for this long. Does anyone have any suggestions how to make it go away. My oil pressure is fine as well if that matters. Thanks for the space.

my dad was driving my car around the other day, and he said at 30-40mph, he could hear a very faint ticking....he said lifter noise and shouldn't cause any problems....it does not tick when he started the car, just when he was at 30-40...how much damage is this going to do if i leave it? is there any way(besides taking the head off to view) to tell if i have bad lifter(s)? thanks guys, this post has been a big help so far... :)

i bought my car in the winter and maybe i wasn't listening but i don't recall any ticking, but maybe it was thicker because of the cold or had synthetic in it, because i've put in GTX the past 3 changes or so. the last one i put in lucas oil stabilizer and it helped somewhat, and a couple of months ago i found a leak in my exhaust manifold gasket which i tightened up.

my main question, however, is about synthetic oil. i have no problem spending the money on it i am just worried about the chance of it ruining seals etc. is this a real problem or not? i notice some of you people with 1g's switched to mobil with no probs. thanks.
