So today i fixed my overheating problem take it for a spin around the block no overheating. Well i am on my way home and bam i throw a rod...

so my question is what is my best option . a rebuild or buy a new shortblock?
I want it to be able to handle 400-425 hp when its done. im at a loss here and i need advice. please help.thanks.

If you broke a rod you need a new block. For your HP goals I would do a stock rebuild. Or for a few hundred more you can go with forged parts. But stock rods and pistons are more than capable of handling well over 400 hp

^ Correct- time for a new engine. You can't rebuild an engine with a damaged block.

We can't tell you how to spend your money. Your horsepower goals are well within the level of a stock 6-bolt engine, but if you want to build a block for better balance and reliability then by all means do so. Search around the site a bit to see what other guys are doing with their engines in your horsepower range...start with the DSM Dyno Challenge.

Actually since you have a 93, you could have that magical 7 bolt if its a late 93! Time to upgrade!

yea, but for cost purposes if hes trying to stay on a budget he may only be able to do the 7 bolt rebuild, which is what i'm doing.

Ok i am kind of on a budget. And i want to keep the 7 bolt as i just got a new clutch setup etc. So do you guys think 6 bolt rods with 2g pistons a good combo. also i have seen on thedsmgraveyard. they sell built shortblocks for round 1500. would this be good?

Since you're buying a new block why not go with a 6 bolt unless the "etc" in your new clutch setup means a 7 bolt flywheel. Even then I'd try to sell that flywheel and whatever else you have and get the 6 bolt.

Well yea i just paid 1200 in labor to put it in.(the clutch setup)

I'm sorry i should have clarified i am pretty sure it is a rod however it did not break the block that i can see from the inside. however i have not taken it apart yet to see the extent of the damage on the inside.

Damn 1200 for the a flywheel and clutch install. Hope that was parts and labor.

This is where buying a repair manual and doing these things yourself come in handy. You won't have a problem with a budget then.

How do you throw a rod without hearing it knock? Do people just wail on it with it knocking?

hmm.. i would inspect the whole block personally, and see exactly what damage was done.

there is a good chance you didn't destroy the block, there is chance you did, I would get it looked at by someone who is qualified.

My 97 threw a rod through the oil pan(previous owner), where as my 90 actually got womperjawed in the oil pump balance shaft and it threw it through the block.... o would definitely take a real close look. You might get lucky!

Sorry typo. meant to say can't see anything from the outside and no leaks . anyway i have it at a friends house his dad is a mechanic.not the same people that raped me on the clutch and no that was not including parts.so we will probably rip it open when i get back from vacation and see if i got lucky.By the way I've had this car all of three days and it ran good for maybe 20 minutes.then it exploded...
