My project 92 Talon just wouldn't be nice to me.

I figured that my smoking problem was due to my turbo leaking oil, since upper IC pipe had whole bunch of oil in it.

Now more porblems arize....

1st: It wouldn't idle normally, instead it revs up to 2K and drops back to 1K every like 2 sec. if idle is adjusted to be lower then 1100 rpm

2nd: When rmp reach 5K under WOT, it hesitates violently. As soon as rpms drop a bit, it's fine again.

(The good thing I fix the unlock buttons, 'cause it had shaved handles and you couldn't get inside by any means except a trunk....:D)
 
Alright, so I just put in new plugs. Got the NGKs and gapped them at .028 so I don't think that is the problem. Also just finished a boost leak test cause I had a torn coupler. Still have a small leak coming from the cold side of the IC but I don't think its a big enough leak to cause this problem, and I can't seem to pinpoint it. Anyways, whether its WOT or not, the car will not pull past 5k. It starts sputtering and jerking. I can reach full boost with no problems, but I have a 60 trim turbo (yes, a little too big for my setup right now) so it doesn't even reach peak spool till about 4k, so that only leaves me 1k of good rpms to run in full boost. :cry: Not sure if its fuel cut, I wouldn't think it is. But maybe with that big of turbo,even only at 9lbs of boost the ECU is like WTF? and so it cuts fuel. I personaly think its something to do with the MAF. Even though i converted from the N/T to the turbo one, I still have to have a hole in the intake pipe for the car to boost at all. Without the hole, as soon as I start to boost I would get a really violent jerking. and couldn't do anything! Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to try and get all the info out there. Thanks!
 
Alright, so there is a small hole in the top of my intercooler. Not sure how that happened, but that isn't the half of it. Decided to do a standard check for shaft play....which checked out fine as expected of a brand new turbo with less than 1000 miles on it. But while spinning the turbine, I discovered it is getting stuck in a few spots and requires a bit more force to get it to move again :cry: I'm super pissed, :mad: because like I said the turbo is factory new with less than 1k on it. Anyone know what would cause it to start getting stuck???
 
I have seen a journal bearing turbos do this do to the clearance for oiling. You probably just binded it up a bit , and thats why it got stuck for a sec. When it's spinning form exhaust pressure it's much more efficient.If it gets stuck in the same place everytime i might start to worry.
 
Well luckily turbonetics has a one year no hassle warranty :thumb: so if it gets any worse they will be sending me a new one. I'm just not looking forward to having to take everything apart again :cry:
 
Thats why I didn't think it was fuel cut, its not quite as violent as I imagine fuel cut to be. It just sputters and hesitates and just won't pull anymore. So yeah, I believe its associated with that hole in the IC.
 
I imagine that may produce similar symptoms. However, in this case there is no cat to get clogged LOL.
 
Lol, yes. But as soon as I check one problem off, about 2-3 more pop up and irritate me all over again. Now I'm getting super bad idle surge every time I drive for more than 5 minutes. But I've read alot of the articles on that issue. I'm guessing its the ISC. I just wanna drive my baby without having to worry about whats gonna go wrong next LOL. Maybe I'll just park her and go buy a new EVO :thumb:
 
No I haven't. The car has 139 on the clock, and the plug wires are probably still the originals. I think I'll replace them this weekend and see if that helps at all too. I'm betting the boost leak from the IC tank is the main culprit though as far as not pulling higher than 5k. The idle surge though I don't think would be from the plug wires.
 
Just like the title says the power is reallt dropping off after 5k. What do you guys think?I know i was running a little lean, but i will straighten that out.22psiMy temps were also a little high do to back to back runs

First, post in the tech section - log advice :

Look at your throttle position, something is screwy with your throttle system. Make sure the line is tight, bolts are tight, and TPS is adjusted correctly. Then do another log.
 
Boostest is showing a fall from 24psi to about 15psi from 5200rpms to 6000rpms. Is your ebay 16g loosing boost that fast by red line? If not, you're airflow metering is out of wack. . .

34 lbs/min on an ebayturb is what I see at peak. Which is good for what you've invested. But it drops off to under 30 lbs/min by peak rpms. Clearly you have a metering problem IF you're holding boost to redline.
 
Seems strange that you throttle position is wandering around like that. To me that says one of two things - you're a sissy boy who is afraid of flooring it (which since you are complaining that it isn't fast enough, seems unlikely) or something is preventing you from flooring it all the way. Make sure you pedal is going all the way to the floor. It almost looks like you might have a floor mat bunched up under the pedal or something. Because this effectively makes your throttle body much smaller, it will kill your upper rpm power.
 
It used to hold to redline. I'm thinking i may have to mess with the mbc. I'll post back and let you all know. The tps offset is screwy. I am getting wot it just needs offset or adjusted.

OMG!Well i think i may have the tune im sticking with:thumb:Keep in mind i saw just shy of 37lbs/min in this log around 22psi. I did some tweaking with the mbc, and some more tuning, and WOW. This thing just woke up:thumb:Check out the estimate for hp and torque around 5300rpm. I'd be happy to be any where around those figures. The pull was a short one is second:notgood:Dont want to make the neighbors mad:nono:If you didnt see matt's post this is an ebay turbo/16g.

With your weight as 3300lbs, dsmlink is showing 360whp. And 37 lbs/min is good for a cheap ebay turbo :) . Tell everyone in the other thread. That will give one place for all to get the info they need for ebay 16g turbos.
 
heres the deal. the car just wont rev past 5k
it is a misfire and feels like im hitting the rev limiter..
ive changed and gapped the spark plugs to NGKs and checked the sparkplug wires
did a boost leak test... now what?
 
check your fuel injectors. i had one get clogged and just completely stop working, getting a cyl. 3 misfire. after i replaced everything electrical ($200 later) i replaced the #3 fuel injector and it took care of the problem.
