My project 92 Talon just wouldn't be nice to me.

I figured that my smoking problem was due to my turbo leaking oil, since upper IC pipe had whole bunch of oil in it.

Now more porblems arize....

1st: It wouldn't idle normally, instead it revs up to 2K and drops back to 1K every like 2 sec. if idle is adjusted to be lower then 1100 rpm

2nd: When rmp reach 5K under WOT, it hesitates violently. As soon as rpms drop a bit, it's fine again.

(The good thing I fix the unlock buttons, 'cause it had shaved handles and you couldn't get inside by any means except a trunk....:D)

I would also make sure you do not have any vacuum leaks, they attach to the IM on the far side (facing the firewall).

You aren't "Wasting" a Wednesday night, you are glorifying a Wednesday by learning about the mechanics of a very tricky vehicle.

Okay, I just changed my plugs and wires, and that didnt change at all.
Is there any other possiblities that it might NOT have to do with the coil pack or wires at all?

p.s. This weekend I do plan on looking at all of my vacuum lines and replacing if damaged

Ive been helping him out on his car as well. We changed a bad ECU, seemed to make the car run smoother but did not help the problem. when you get up to 4500-5000 in ANY GEAR at ANY throttle position it does it. Its like a studderbox and sounds like a hardcore misfire/fuel cut. The timing is bouncing around during the datalogger view when it happens. The only thing we havent tried is the CAS and timing. Any help would be greatly appricated. thanks guys!!!

ok thanks alot. just asking. did it drive super good up to 4,500rpm's or did it drive bad all the time?

I bet its the timing. When I was a wee boy and purchased my first car with no license; just plain ol' illegal driving, my 1984 Nissan 200sx jumped a few teeth marks and wouldn't go past 3k.

Time to pull out that timing gun and shoot away! :thumb:

You can test your cas by taking it off turn the key to the on position and spin the tab on the cas. When you do that you should hear your injectors ticking and your coil pack firing.

nope not it :(. umm could my coil pack be taking a shit. and wont let me rev past 5k? and does any one know what to set a maf-f to for 550cc? stock its set to 2 if im not wrong?

There's a bunch of possibilities on this. Could be fuel issue (fuel pump, fuel filter), could be mechanical (valve float), or could be ignition (CAS, coil packs, crank sensor [can't remember if these have one]).

Since you said the timing is bouncing on the datalogger i'm going to assume it's ignition related, so CAS or coil packs... How much is it bouncing?

Edit: just read it happens at part throttle so that pretty much eliminates fuel...

You're not running DSM-link by chance are you?

nope. and i was thinking coil pack or CAS. cant i take my coil pack to auto zone to get it test'd? does any one know what the kinda volts the o2 sen should be puting out?

if I were you i'd find a local DSM friend you can swap parts with to shotgun the problem. You know it's probably those two items so.... Diagnosing an intermittant problem like that isn't easy...

hey I am new to the dsm world but I was a mechanic at my stepfathers shop, did you check for a vacuum leak, My 89 rx-7 did the same thhing because of and open vacuum leak. I may be wrong but give it a shot

i swapd a good coil in it still does the same thing. and all vac lines are good. my vac holds right at 20 at idle.

Could also be the ignition module. The ignition module is just a pair of high-watt transistors, and they go bad from time to time. I used the DSM modules on my turbo Rio and burnt a few of them out, which gave me the symptoms you are talking about. (Well, the Rio would misfire and if I wasn't careful the coilpack would fry. Luckily Rio coilpacks are dirt cheap)

Anyway, try swapping that next.

Thanks alot for all the help guys it was well worth all the effort on everyones part. He fixed the problem. It was my old car, and the settings for the MAF-t were off hardcore and thats something we didnt check. The car did it before the maft was installed as well, so I didnt check that. Again, thanks for all the help!
