I sold a set of cams over the internet to a 1997 2g and told the guy I could tap the intake cam for his cas since I have the tap and drill bit that is needed. my question is how deep do I tap. does it have to be exact or can I tap extra deep to be safe? i don't have cas bolt so i'm kinda in the dark here.

I did some searching and found one guy say 1.75" deep and another one said this

17/64 drill bit drilled to 1.48 deep
M8 x 1.25 tap 1.37 deep

also any other tips are appreciated. Thanks in advance for any more input

If you have the stock cam still you could measure down the hole with a smaller diameter bolt and see what depth you need. If you don't have it I think I still have a set of stockers sitting here I could measure.
