we have a '96 Talon (base model) that runs/drives great. I found a 95 Tsi AWD for sale for cheap with NO engine and tranny. Would it work to put the engine/tranny from our base model Talon into the AWD body? We would love an AWD car, but not really interested in having a turbo car (for our teen son, 'nough said)

thanks, that's all I wanted to know. We will just stick with what we have then, the AWD one's that are complete are out of our budget for a first car for a teen! And they all seem like they are turbo's anyhow.....

Well if he doesn't want any Subaru other than a WRX, he wouldn't have been happy with a non-turbo Talon anyway. If you're buying him the car, and don't want him to have a turbocharged one, a Subaru is probably the best awd option, like an older Legacy or something.

is he set on having a sporty car? if not then maybe a pickup truck or something with 4x4, those teens also love to go mudding, and its alot less dangerous about the only thing that can happen is you get stuck.

you could always buy the AWD car and then find a motor from a 1g n/t.

I'd say, Subaru Impreza Rs 2.5 liter motor, Awd, Not turbo but sporty non the less.

I agree, a 90's 2.5 RS or a Legacy GT (90's GT has the same 2.5). They both look pretty sporty and are fun to drive. Oh, and they aren't too expensive either and I have had very few problems with them in my experience.

my older son has the muddin' nitch filled at our house. He has an '87 Pathfinder that we straight-axled this summer (he's away at college at U of I now).

So, the motor is completely different in our n/t Talon than it is in the AWD tsi version, is that why it wouldn't work?

I agree with this^ Go buy a Cheap 1990-94 Non turbo 4g63 and install that and the AWD trans/ transfer case into the AWD car. Then you will have a NICE Non turbo AWD Talon! If you put it together well it would be a very stout reliable car for your son! And NOT super fast, so he will stay out of trouble haha. :p

Plus you can always upgrade to turbo once he gets a little older.

maybe we will make it a project later down the road..... it would involve buying TWO more vehicles to do that, so I think we will pass on the idea for now!

i'm going to tell you now what my parents should have told me. Regardless of what kinda car you end up buying him, He can still get into trouble with it. Hell watch cops one day and tell me do you see people with sports cars running from the cops? I'm not trying to say i think your son will do this, just saying it doesn't matter the car it's his foot that will get him in trouble.

i bought my 95 n/t and got 3 speeding tickets and a few other fines. The car was slow but in my mind - bullet fast LOL. Now i have a 99 awd turbo and i've yet to get a speeding ticket and this car is way faster. I think alot of it has to do with maturity but trust me Sir, you will have a handfull if he's already looking for something sporty.

Good Luck

^^^Amen!

I came from a BAD driving record. Some years back now. But I havn't gotten a ticket in 8 years now. I got more tickets with the 85 buick regal 3.8 (not t-type 3.8, just plain-jane 3.8). And a close second lapful of tickets with the 1992 non-turbo FWD eclipse that I had so long ago. The problem isn't the power; it's the age. You have to somehow get him to keep his thoughts off going fast on the road. That may infact mean rewarding him for not getting a speeding ticket through a period of time. Or giving him a project car now he can take to the track, and take it if he gets up to 2 tickets.

. . . Not trying to tell you how to raise your son. Just giving you advice from being one of those bullheaded sons in years past :) My two sons are only 6 and 4.

I honestly don't think I have to worry about this one..... both my kids are very responsible. Older son is in college now and has only one ticket.......One of the reasons we don't want a turbo is we want less upkeep - we work on all our own vehicles, and less is best :) The straight axle on the Pathfinder was NOT our idea, but in the long run, it will be less upkeep than the lifted IFS and all the bending/breaking parts..... a non-turbo vs. a turbo car will also be less upkeep........

I've never really had a problem with any of my cars at stock boost. Tougher transmissions than n/t transmissions. And you have ONE more moving part. You need to run premium and use synthetic oil or change the oil every 3k religiously. And do a boost leak test every time you change the spark plugs. Run NGK plugs. You will have no more problems with the 4g63 T motor than you would with the 4g63 n/a motor, IMHO.

Either way you go. You've chosen a GREAT longblock for reliability in the 4g63 or the 420a (which is in the car you have now).

I am going to back DSM onster on this one, the 4g63 has been a reliable motor used in mitsubishi's Evolution ,Eclipse and Eagle Talon for a long time! These motors have proven themselves time and time again. Turbo cars are not necessarily more upkeep if you take care of them and are religious about upkeep. I have had 2 Eclipse's one GST and my current GSX, I have never gotten a ticket in either car, however my first car was a 94 toyota pickup truck with over 200k miles on it, I had 4 speeding tickets in that truck. Its all about the maturity, not the car.

Agreed. I had a 98 Eclipse rs and got my fair number of tickets with it. Now that i have my GST ive yet to get one(knocks on wood). Trust me, a teenager will ge a speeding ticket in anything. Sometimes they surprise me

ROFL

I wouldn't even want that ugly thing in my driveway!

ROFLROFL you got that right ^

You dont have to buy 2 cars tho. You can find 4g63 Non turbo engines all over the place for about $200 dollars! The expensive part for you will be getting the AWD transmission and transfer case. Sometimes those are hard to track down.

The reason you never see sports cars running from the police on the show COPS is cause 80% of them probably get away! :tease: I know a few DSMers that have successfully gotten away from the police in high speed chases LOL. I don't Agree with that type of stuff tho...no one should ever run from the police.
