we have a '96 Talon (base model) that runs/drives great. I found a 95 Tsi AWD for sale for cheap with NO engine and tranny. Would it work to put the engine/tranny from our base model Talon into the AWD body? We would love an AWD car, but not really interested in having a turbo car (for our teen son, 'nough said)

If he can keep from upgrading the stock Tsi AWD, it isn't a bad first car. They're really easy to work on. Technical information is all over the internet (you already found the #1 source.)

I bought my car because I wanted AWD for in the snow. With a good alignment, these things are a dream in the white stuff. With a half decent set of tires, he'll have to try to get it in a ditch.

The stock turbo has a little kick to it, but not much. If you run a 98/99 or Evo 8 Ecu in it (maybe DSMLink gives this option too), you could change the speed limiter to something lower, but what's the fun in that.

If you really don't want him to have a turbo then I say +2 on the non turbo engine (4g63 of course) in the TSI AWD. You don't need to find another car to get these parts. They have JDM non turbo 6 and 7 bolt engines on ebay for like $600 and its probably not a lot more for a transmission with it. They have pretty low miles and the swap is as simple as a six bolt swap I'm assuming. (Would he have to use the non-turbo ECU though?) That way he has an awd dsm and he can always put a turbo eingine in it when he gets older and have an awesome starter platform.

If upkeep is the only thing you're worried about with the turbo engine, I would say the same as others have. Both the n/t and turbo 4g63 are going to have roughly the same amount of issues. All DSM's break, but if it's kept stock or close to it, I don't see it having too many issues.

They're not that hard to work on either. I'm still young and don't have a ton of experience working on engines, but I still have little problems doing things under the hood of my Talon, and it definitely wouldn't be that much easier on a n/t 4g63.

My first car was a Tsi Awd auto. With a blown motor. I think it was defiantly a good thing that i got to put the motor in my self when i was 15. I really respected the car, because i put the time and hard work in it. I have yet to get any type of ticket and I've owned 3 turbo'd Dsm's.
