Sup Everyone,

I'm looking at a 96 talon TSI awd thats for sale right now. It has 88000 miles but has a salvage title and engine trouble. What happened is the previous test driver took it for a spin but left the radiator cap off, resulting in the engine blowing up(The radiator blew its fluid out all over the engine and the guy ran the car with no fluid, making the engine (blow-up). so now the engine makes a rattle sound over 4000 rpms. The car also cuts out sometimes when car is coasting, but then when you step on the gas its ok. My future plans for the car would be to build it up.

So now heres my question, Purchase or RUN?

A new engine if it needs one is 2700 dollars without installation or shipping. Can I just buy the car and port the cylinders, replace pistons, seals, gaskets, rings, crankshaft all with performance parts or just buy a new engine. Does it need a new engine or just parts? Basically whats amatter with the engine?

The seller wants 3000 but we got him down to 2000. We would really like the purchase the car for 1500 since its a salvage. It looks like the front end alignment in the front is off due to poor reconstruction. We dont mind the work but is it worth it?

PLEASE help!!!:talon: Sry for the long post :D

I would problebly just buy a new 6 bolt engine (6 bolt blocks are from a 1989 through early production 1992 dsm cars)! because that second gen 7 bolt is problebly going to crank walk on you! Put it this way, I have two friends with second gens... those two friends both got crank walk. One got it 6 months after buying the car, the other one wasnt until 2 years after! So its all in a roll of the dice! :)

Dude, whoever is selling you a motor for 2700 your about to get the ROYAL 12'' SHAFT!!! Buy a built 6bolt and just drop it in if your looking to spend that much cash. Then you got a 2000 Dollar car - 3000 Dollar motor and running like a bat outa hell.

Notes: Get the car, buy a 6bolt, build it. Swap it in and smile.

I would buy it definitly. I'm not sure how bad of damage it could of done with it running with no coolant. It all depends on how long he went. He could of just ran it until the headgasket blew, he could of also cracked the block.

Still, even if it needs a new motor, get that mofo. If you can get it for $2,000 it's still a good deal...if you are willing to do the work. As for the motor check out magnus motorsports ( http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/ ). They have a pretty big array of motors you can buy from them already built. They are a little bit expensive but their work is great. If you know how to build it yourself then go to a junk yard and get a 6-bolt block (any dsm from 89-92) and build it your self.

Do you want a car to drive, or one to work on? It'll cost you 4-7K to get into a good DSM- still a bargain in days of 10K KIAs.
What _else_ did this moron to do this car while he was raping the engine's guts? And "alignment in the front is off due to poor reconstruction"? DSMs, by their hi-output nature, are already pretty much live grenades. I fear the one you're considering here may already have its pin out, handle off, and a burning fuse.
If you can find a DSM person around you, have them look it over.
