Henrdon,
All synthetic oil threads are merged here.i'm trying to buy a 1g dsm turbo awd (as i'm sure most of you know by now from my recent ramblings in other threads). Most of the ones i've been looking at are bone stock for the most part except repairs and i have a feeling all are running on regular oil.

my question is when i finally buy one should i run regular, full sythetic, or somwhere in between (i am planning on running full synthetic).

also, if the car is running regular and i want to switch to full synthetic, i've heard it can be damaging to switch all at once. or is that just a fable? it makes sense and i was planning on slowly uprading the oil quality everytime i changed it until it was running full synthetic. is that the wrong thing to do?

I cant find the thread but I put it in and took the car out, beat the shit out of it and pulled it in the garage right away and drained the oil. Not a super great test but it was good enough for me. The thread we were talking in was talking about how the crank beats it so hard it foams. In my case that wasnt what happened, it looked the same as when i put the oil in

Hey Guys,
Im doing my first oil change on my 98' GS-T tomorow. I had bought some Mobil 1 10w-30. I wanted to know if I should switch to synthetic or stick with the regular oil. The original owner had used regular oil for all of its 105,000 miles. I have heard of synthetic removing things that were sealing other things and Im not in a posistion to be doing alot of engine work. This is why Im hesitant to do the seafoam treatment too.

Any past experiances or opinions would help.

Well ive been using synthetic ever since i got ma car 110 xxx miles.....and no proplem here..Mobil Rocks!!!

If the first owner didnt use synthetic, don't use synthetic. You will loose some sealing capabilities by switching. Seafoam though is not going to affect anything but before you do your oil change. Put in some seafoam, run it through, change your fuel filter, and then change your oil. That way everything stays clean.

use full synthetic, u can even read on the oil bottle itself, "for turbocharged or supercharged cars". ive only used mobil 1 full synthetic oil. u might want to throw in a bottle of Lucas in there too, or some other oit treatment, but ive heard Lucas is one of the, if not the, best. im gonna do my oil change this friday, after doing the Seafoam process, caint wait too se how it drives after that. if you dont knwo what Seafoam is, look in these threads i think it will be in the second or third page and its titled something with Seafoam. good luck. peace

exactly what nightracer said, you actually might loose sealing capabilities since hes used regular for so long. try doing the Seafoam process before though and that way you kill two birds with one stone. peace.

I use a Mobile High Miles synthetic with a K&N oil filter, The orginal owner use Just plain Mobile. So when I bought the car I went for about 30,000 mile with Synthetic blend then I went to a full synthetic and I haven't had any problems to date.

There has been debate whether or not to use Lucas oil stabilizer in synthetic oil. Through the test I've seen, I'm not going to use it. There are threads on here about it and people have done tests with the Lucas actually making the synthetic worse. Some say it's fine, you can decide for yourself. Read this thread:

hello

i was wondering if i can switch back to using regular oil after using synthetic blend once? i searched but all i can find were posts about people using fully synthetic oil.

thank you

Just wondering if this can be done. I change the oil in my car every 3000km or so anyways. So im guessing not only is it a waste to run synthetic but the cost of it is adding up to be not worth it in my mind. Will there be any consequences if i switched back?

Not at all. Go ahead and run conventional and you won't have any issues. Most people run into leakage problems when they go the other way since synthetic is thinner than conventiional and will find any leaks in your system.

?????? I have always been told that synethic bonds to parts even after you shut the car down. If you go synethic you can't go back because the synthetic will cause the regular oil to thicken and bond heavily to all your internal parts. Causing premature bearing failure.

Let me know how it works out.

Most syntec, especially the stuff available at auto parts stores, is compatable with dino oil. I wouldn't worry about it. I would never switch back, but there shouldn't be any mixture related problems if you do... engine problems are another issue.:p Synthetic is the way to go!

I use a synthetic blend which I believe is regular oil and synthetic mixed together. Works fine this way so should be OK to use 100% regular again.

Hey all,
I just recently bought a 97 Eclispe RS and am looking to do my first oil change. I bought myself some synthetic oil, but have only heard that it might cause my engine to leak. I'm really concerned about it as thats the last thing I want to have happen. While searching around the internet I found out that it can be caused by cracks in the seals. Is there anything else I should be looking for before deciding to use synthetic oil or not? Is synthetic oil good for my cars engine? any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks! :)

synthetic oil is good for any engine. plain and simple. The lubricating properties of it are far more advance and it can hold up without breaking down for much longer. I have also heard that they can cause an oil leak, but honestly... an oil leak just from switching to synthetic... would most likely be so miniscule you wouldn't even notice it. If your car is not already burning oil or leaking, I would recommend doing it.

What ^^^^ said. I switched to synthetic when I bought my car at 52xxx miles and did my first oil change. I'm at 58xxx and I don't have an oil leak. I use Castrol Syntec 10w40.
