Henrdon,
All synthetic oil threads are merged here.i'm trying to buy a 1g dsm turbo awd (as i'm sure most of you know by now from my recent ramblings in other threads). Most of the ones i've been looking at are bone stock for the most part except repairs and i have a feeling all are running on regular oil.

my question is when i finally buy one should i run regular, full sythetic, or somwhere in between (i am planning on running full synthetic).

also, if the car is running regular and i want to switch to full synthetic, i've heard it can be damaging to switch all at once. or is that just a fable? it makes sense and i was planning on slowly uprading the oil quality everytime i changed it until it was running full synthetic. is that the wrong thing to do?

but now that i look at it, that bobguy shows that synthetic oil doesnt climb the gears on its own....so is synthetic bad just by itself? i dunno, im confused

the syntheic is thinner, but adding the lucas causes it to hold air

where there is air, there is no lubrication = heat, wear, failure

Do you really think that with how fast everything moves in your crank case that nothing is going to have air in it? I use lucas all the time, as does my friends 600+ eclipse and he uses synthetic. Honestly i dont know if it does anything, but if you have noisy lifters, the stuff really does quiet them down a bit.

Seems as if there are mixed results....idk what to tell ya, all im sayin is that i and almost everyone else i know uses the stuff and yet to have any ill effects. Guess its just personal prefrence at this point.

Yeah same here im not going to tell you to put it in but i know i used it in my eclipse with synth and i have only heard the tapping quietin down.

I've been running Mobil 1 full synthetic oil in my car since I've had it, with the lucas additive. My buddys 1g just went to the tuners shop to get tuned and he said the guy like pretty much yelled at him for using full synthetic oil and had to let it drain out of the car all night. I think he had built internals, evo 3 16g w/internal wastegate, cams(not sure what),full exhuast,550 injectors, safc2, FMIC. Any reason why? Are there certain conditions in which you shouldn't or what. I tried to search, but everyone here seems to run full synthetic also.

Because the guy at that shop is an idiot. Full synthetic is just fine to use anytime and is recommended. Most performance cars come from the factory with full synthetic in them now.

Sounds to me like the mechanic doesn't know anything about oil, or he was just to lazy to have to wait and let the oil drain. You should only use fully synthetic if you want to protect your turbo and engine and have them last longer. I have had 3 different mechanics ask me to make sure I do it. I also use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic. Fully Synthetic is designed for the high temperatures put out by the turbo. Non Synthetic Oils will break down quickly and stop coating your parts.

Yeah whats what I remember reading, thats why I got confused as hell when my buddy told me that.

You need to get your buddy's car out of that shop because apparently that guy doesn't know anything and have your buddy put synthetic back in it. I would do it in the parking lot of the shop just for kicks and giggles, but i'm an a-hole. :D

If your buddies engine was brand new, that could be why.Your not supposed to use full synthetic until after the engine breaks in.The rings won't seat properly. If you buy an engine from JAM or other reputable shops. It's written in their instructions not to use synthetic until after break-in.

I'd like to say that the "buddy" in the original post should not go to that shop anymore, if the mechanic there is going to bust his balls about having synthetic oil in a modified turbo four-cylinder. What ever happened to DSMers doing their own work. I mean, having the oil changed for you? That boggles my mind.

The only reason I would use conventional oil in the engine would be for break-in of a new block. Otherwise, take the best care of the most important parts of your engine that you can. No skimping on oil.

Get your buddys car out of that shop. I stopped at a shop in the area and overheard this older mechanic telling all these younger kids that synthetic is crap. Needless to say I left the shop and will not be looking to them for any advice.

Not to go off topic, but my mechanic told me I was gona lose lots of power and especially low end torque with the big exhaust. It also causes excess crankcase pressure that's going to blow out seals. :tease:

That's all news to me. Maybe he should see my dyno numbers... big torque loss there.. :toobad:

This is exactly why you should do every bit of work yourself that you can, as I now do. Like everyone said, get the car back fast and never go there again.

The mechanic probably was pissed because the lucas shit takes forever to drain, especially cold. i dunno i have mixed emotions about the stuff, yea it reduces contact of metal, like with worn bearings ;) but at the same time it'll turn your crank into a big ball of taffy and if you use too much i have seen it cause oil starvation because it wont drain back to the pan fast enough, granted it was half and half LOL. synthetic oil is the best stuff ever though, but don't try to drive like 10k on an oil change. it still gets dirty
for the reccord i will NEVER run lucas in my motors especiall the turbo ones, but i have found it usefull in diffs/trannys of SOME vehicles

I added the lucas once myself. He wasn't getting his oil changed, he suppose to be getting a wideband tune? I can't tell you much about the car because he bought it from a guy that works at slowboy :notgood: . So if the engine was just rebuilt, im not sure. Hes a retard when it comes to anything about cars too. Kind of a shame. Hes not even really a buddy LOL , my buddys brother. Gonna double think using lucas twice now though, thanks :thumb:

Using it in an older engine that's kinda worn is cool. I wouldn't in a fresh tirght engine, unless you have a slow leak that you want to slow down even more.

Yeah it can quiet the lifters, by coating the tops pf them. Sure does not help get oil up top, as thicker stuff will only clog them more.

For lifters, throw a half can of seafoam in the oil when you change the oil (start it, let idle for a couple minutes, drain).

I did a lucas test with conventional oil and got no foaming or anything even close. Now I know this isnt exactly on topic but I wouldnt think synthetic would be a ton different. Ill look for the thread
