Henrdon,
All synthetic oil threads are merged here.i'm trying to buy a 1g dsm turbo awd (as i'm sure most of you know by now from my recent ramblings in other threads). Most of the ones i've been looking at are bone stock for the most part except repairs and i have a feeling all are running on regular oil.

my question is when i finally buy one should i run regular, full sythetic, or somwhere in between (i am planning on running full synthetic).

also, if the car is running regular and i want to switch to full synthetic, i've heard it can be damaging to switch all at once. or is that just a fable? it makes sense and i was planning on slowly uprading the oil quality everytime i changed it until it was running full synthetic. is that the wrong thing to do?

I went back to dino for a while, because of issues i was having (wasn't sure is my engine was bad or not). Then I found out the engine is still good.

Went back to sythetic.

I noticed a difference. I would say stick with Synth. Yes the oils are compatible, that is not the only issue. Engine gets used to the way synth works in it. Dino had bigger molecules and they are incsonistent as well. Hard to explain, as I am not a scientist or a mechanic.

THe engine runs smoother and revs nicer. Again, this engine had synthetic in it for quite a while, the i used dino, then went back. I only used dino for about 3K or so.

In the long run, your engine could possibly be damaged if it is used to synth.

No one can prove or disprove this theory (like many oil arguments). Better safe then sorry.

Just make sure if you use dinosaur oil that it is graphite based like Castrol. Some brands are actually wax based. Using Mobil 1 synthetic myself for the last 50,000. :dsm:

Well, my Eclipse RS just past the 146k mark, and i was either using Castrol Synthetic blend or a Higher milage Oil from Castrol....i bought the car with 109k and haven't had one problem with the motor ...recently due to the miles starting to get up there i went a full synthetic...Mobil 1...i bought the car 2 and half years ago and the only serious problems i have had was a battery went bad and a tiny pin hole leak out of the radiator....so I'm pretty happy with my DSM :thumb: :dsm: :talon: :laser: ...

switched from dino to mobil1 got lifer tick switched back to dino no more lifter tick

you can get dino for as low as $1/quart that means for the cost of synthetic you can change your oil 5 times as often that is way, way better for your engine than just using synthetic

From what I have heard you can go from regular to synthetic and after that you have to stay with synthetic. Now I hear you can go back to regular oil? What are the potential side effects of going back and forth?

Ok I just got a new engine from Overbore.com and the shop that put it in started it off with synthetic, i saw everyone recommended using non-synth for the first 1k or so,

My questions are what is going to happen and why do people recommend non synth on a new engine

thanks

Synthetic penetrates more places, lubricates better (reduces friction better than regular oil), doesn't break down as fast (withstands higher heat).

The idea of breaking-in an engine is for parts to seat against each other properly. Breaking-in period is where metal is being ground as parts seat properly.

in our automotive class our teacher always tells us when we break in an engine always put regular oil. When doing this for the first few thousand miles it allows the rings to seal to the cylinder much better. Also to break it in good a lot of stop and go driving is good for it, dont take it on a four hour non-stop trip.

thanks guys, gonna just leave the synthetic in their, Im gonna have to agree with defiant on this one, though im sure you can find reasons why using on or the other.

Best reason i can see to use regular is the fact that you have to change your oil so many times in a short period LOL

the z06 comes from the factory with synthetic. who do you think knows more about engine mechanics: shop teacher or chevrolet engineers?

manufacturers specify anything that will save them money. go tell them you are going over 65 in the car and they wont repair a thing for you (personal experience)

synthetic lasts longer than organic and lubricates better. if you believe everything everyone tells you, you're going to have problems. people that say organic is better than synthetic are likely the same people that insist premium fuel is just money down the toilet. do some research, if you still want to use organic, go ahead, it's your money. i prefer to think of it in the sense that, "i just spent $xxxx on my car, i think it's worthwhile to spend $25 to make sure it keeps working"

not sure if you were arguing against me but I was stating I am in agreeance that I am going to stick with the synthetic. Costly as it may be cost is a minor factor at this point

The only reason not to use synthetic at breakin is cost. Why dump all those break-in deposits into an expensive oil when all your gonna do is change it at 500 or so miles anyways? :)

yeah i figured that was the most logical explanation behind the "rumor"

Ill dump the extra cash, its not that much of a difference anyway fi you do it yourself

Anyone know how much oil our cars take? everyone recommend 10w30?

Thanks again guys

I just got my engine rebuilt(head machined, 95 pistons, rods machined).. After I have 1500k miles on my engine, I would like to change to synthetic. I've read a bunch of threads on synthetic oil and it seems like the oil doesn't matter. I'll probably end up with mobil1 10w30.

Can I just drain my old oil and just put in the synthetic? What's the process for changing oil from regular to synthetic?
