Henrdon,
All synthetic oil threads are merged here.i'm trying to buy a 1g dsm turbo awd (as i'm sure most of you know by now from my recent ramblings in other threads). Most of the ones i've been looking at are bone stock for the most part except repairs and i have a feeling all are running on regular oil.

my question is when i finally buy one should i run regular, full sythetic, or somwhere in between (i am planning on running full synthetic).

also, if the car is running regular and i want to switch to full synthetic, i've heard it can be damaging to switch all at once. or is that just a fable? it makes sense and i was planning on slowly uprading the oil quality everytime i changed it until it was running full synthetic. is that the wrong thing to do?

In synthetic oils, they rearrange the molecules so that the oil does not have to be changed as often and you can get away with running thinner oils. All porches, vipers, corvettes, come from the factory with mobile 1 sythetic oil. :thumb: its good stuff!

Hi, just wondering if its going to make a difference if I use synthetic or conventional oil in my TSi.. Meaning: is there a performance difference, AND is there a life-span difference (for the car)?
Not in the real world.

Makers use Mobil 1 for the same reasons people use Duracell, Anacin, Excedrin and all the rest- they're paid to. Just like the rest of the whores.

Mobil 1 is terrific oil. And, it's terrifically expensive.

Please refer to one of the hundreds of other oil threads for details.

anyone ever heard of running honda synthetics in a DSM? the oil is engineered to take higher heats and is the equivalent of a 30 weight i believe..anyway, just curious

Oil is oil is oil. Synthetics are the same, just different flavors. I'd bet "Honda" synthetic is Mobil 1 or a similar company large enough to be able to keep up with Honda's market demands.
It won't hurt anything other than your wallet to run synthetic, regardless who's name is on the sticker.

I've had an oil leak ever since I swapped to a 6-bolt and part of it may have been that I didn't break the engine in using regular oil (I didn't know then). Anyway, the question that I'm asking is if there's any horrible terrible thing that will happen if I switch back to dinosaur oil. I've been using synthetic ever since the block was put in (about 10k ago) and the block was a new shortblock from slowboy. Probably one of the main reasons for switching back to regular oil is that it's easy to find and reasonably cheap. Thanks for the help guys.

Defiant, you're the fu**in man! I knew I could count on you to answer this question. I think you're the only one I know who actually supports conventional oil. :thumb:

Well, thanks- I have only its cost "against" synthetics. "For" natural oils, you can thank current additive packages. They really are putting out excellent oils these days, some five grades better than when the DSM plant started putting out cars. Of course synthetics are excellent, but I just can't justify the price for the tiny increase in performance in street (or, street/race) cars.

Since I have owned my Laser N.A.(March 2004), I used the Valvoline oil for “High Mileage Cars” (75K + miles, 10W30). I guess I decided to start using this type of oil since my Laser had 73K on it when I got it, and it is the first car I have owned that came with less than 100K, since I bought my ‘Cuda when I was a kid…many, many years ago…….(funny, it had 75K on it when I bought it….LOL…wish I would have kept it!).

Anyway until winter this is what I have used. I just switched to Pennzoil “High Mileage” since it came in a 5W-30 and I could not find the Valvoline in that weight. The high mileage is advertised to have special additives to condition seals and other rubber components that get brittle with age. Who really knows if it does, but it cannot hurt.

My car uses/burns, no oil. Lifters are quiet, except once in a while, one will tick at start up but then quiets down after a bit, (after it pumps up I assume) and this is has only happened maybe three tims in 20k miles of use.

The only time I have had to add oil is when I change it, which is every 4 to 5K, 4K being my target change milage. So, seems to work OK for me. :thumb: :laser:

i just switched to conventional on my 2g cuz of little oil leaks..hopefully itll help..i use quaker state cuz its cheap and i can get it here in town :p hate small towns

I just read that alot of the crankwalked cars were using mobil 1. The explaination was that it's too thin and "helps" cw happen. If you car has walked, what oil were u using? Any relevant comment is welcome.

Thanx

I would say that mobil 1 does not cause crankwalk. It's just the fact that a large majority of dsm owners use mobil 1 and some of those blocks succumb to cw. The two aren't related.

I heard that 42% of joggers struck by lightning were wearing Nikes. I only wear Reeboks when it rains.
