Henrdon,
All synthetic oil threads are merged here.i'm trying to buy a 1g dsm turbo awd (as i'm sure most of you know by now from my recent ramblings in other threads). Most of the ones i've been looking at are bone stock for the most part except repairs and i have a feeling all are running on regular oil.

my question is when i finally buy one should i run regular, full sythetic, or somwhere in between (i am planning on running full synthetic).

also, if the car is running regular and i want to switch to full synthetic, i've heard it can be damaging to switch all at once. or is that just a fable? it makes sense and i was planning on slowly uprading the oil quality everytime i changed it until it was running full synthetic. is that the wrong thing to do?

If your Bill Gates or likewise...Please run synthetic. I personally think its all hype.

"If we put it on the shelf, they will buy it"

Sorta like those blinky valve stem caps. "How do we get people to spend more on oil?"

Tell them its $3.00 a quart better !!

Whatever.

Put in Castrol 20W-50 and watch your oil pressure stay up while idling, and lifter tick damn near disappear permanently.

20W while warm isn't too much drag, its just right.

Mobil 1 is factory fill in:

Chevrolet Corvette
All Porsche vehicles
Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles
Dodge Viper
Ford Mustang Cobra R
All Aston Martin cars

apparently these manufactuers think so
could be because:

"The synthetics offer the only truly significant differences, due to their superior high temperature oxidation resistance, high film strength, very low tendancy to form deposits, stable viscosity base, and low temperature flow characteristics. Synthetics are superior lubricants compared to traditional petroleum oils. You will have to decide if their high cost is justifed in your application. "

Don't forget the most important one of them all...Lancer Evo 8 is also a Mobil 1 Factory Fill. But i don't use Mobil 1 anymore...and many people on the board have complained of excessive lifter tick from Mobil 1 over other brands....Amsoil has been good so far and lifter tick is only at start up...after about 20 or 30 secs. its near gone.

I use mobil one. Ask anybody who uses mobil one or a similar synthetic oil and they'll tell you it works. It keeps turbos healthy and engines looking like new. If you use synthetic oil from day one on a new motor it will last much longer and hold up to abuse.

you get lifter tick when your oil pressure is way low.

i like mobil 1 10w30 for most occasions, 15w50 if you want to beat the shit out of the car for weeks on end :D

when it comes down to it everyone can spit out blah blah facts but this is what it comes down to. If you have a daily driver you dont beat on and you get the oil changed every 3000 you DONT need it. If you do one of the two 1) hard driver or 2) dont get oil changed every 3000 then you should use it to help beyond 3000.

IMO :thumb:

Just to prove a point on Synthetics...i got my daily , a 1992 Honda Accord LX about 5 years ago...with the exception of the first 2 oil changes when i knew nothing about cars, I have been using an array of Synthetic (100%) oils in the car , ranging from Castrol to Valvaline to Dirty Pennzoil to Mobil 1, etc. Recently i did some maintnance to the car to fix a pain in the arse oil leak and to my amazement when we did the oil pan gasket there wasn't a flake of metal or sediment or ANYTHING in the bottom of the oil pan, it looked brand spankin' new! Guess how many miles are on this original motor with probably the original clutch and oil pan gasket until now??? 253,000 miles!!! and still ticking (the valves that is)...LOL...case in point....Synthetic works! :thumb:

i was told by a buddy of mine, who restores old british sports cars.. (triumph tr's and spitfires), that i should use a 20w50 synthetic in my coche. it has 189,000.. lookin' for another point of view.

I've used mobile 1 synthetic and it has been nothing but good to me. I change my oil & filter every 3,000 miles, and it looks a lot better at 3k, than regular oils. A few friends of mine use regular oil but change it once a month, it equals about the same price as synthetic over a 3 month period but stays much cleaner. I would just hate having to change it once a month.

...they get it for free in exchange for telling the world about it, just like "preferrred" aspirins, toothpastes, batteries and other baloney?

CHP runs normal oil 8,000 between changes.

Synthetic is good, but I don't think it's enough "gooder" to make it worthwhile.

But all it'll hurt is part of your wallet, and we're still talking about beer-money levels.

From personal experience...

I have been using mobil 1 since I bought my gsx four years ago. This past winter, I decided to try castrol gtx. Immediately I noticed more lifter noise. The turbo also made a horrible vibration when spooling. When I switched back to Mobil 1, everything was back to normal. ;)

I brought my car to a local mechanic when i first bought it to get it check out to make sure it was all good. Anyways he told me that since there was only 43000 on the car when i bought it that i should immediately start using mobil one. He ssaid yeah you'll pay more but tuist me you'll thank me in the long run. HE said that he has used mobil one in every one of his cars and after pulling apart the motor after 150,000 miles or more he said that it looked like new... It's not a gimmic like people who don't use it like to think. Regular oil is fine but it's isn't as pure and consistent as sythetic.

And you've been running synthetic, right? :p
Maybe it's true that synthetic doesn't swell your seals like conventional oil does.

Well, to be correct about things...the leak was coming from my Oil Pressure Switch..the Oil Pan Gasket may have even been original from '92....So I highly doubt that myth...

And here I was just about to say thanks to everyone for their semi - informative replies.

On a quick note, one of you mentioned that your engine still looked brand new on the inside after synthetic -

My dad has a Mazda B2000 that the oil was religiously changed on from day one (non - synthetic), and we took the valve cover off at around 120 or 130k. The engine looked perfect!!!! :D

If we want to swap anecdotes, I have over 250,000 miles on the roadster, 170,000 on my '84 200SX Turbo, and 130,000 on my '93 TSi AWD. All on real oil. So what? It's no more than personal luck.

Hi, just wondering if its going to make a difference if I use synthetic or conventional oil in my TSi.. Meaning: is there a performance difference, AND is there a life-span difference (for the car)?

I would only run synthetic in any turbocharged application not because of a performance issue but more reliability. I have used mobile1 or amsoil in my car and have had no problems or gains for that matter. :talon:
