I have collected alot of spare parts for my 91 GSX.
Including very rare gearbox.

It has switchable center differential. Inside the gearbox it is typical W5M31-.... except no VCU, no reverse gear syncro. Seems to be manufactured before 90. There is a special fork for it. Vacuum switch. Center diff open or fully locked.
Have no idea, from what car it became from. Front diff gear ratio is typical for 6g Galant awd. Which says, that rear diff gear ratio should be 2.846:1.

Here are the pictures about it:

I think I already have most of the combo for spare parts :rocks::rocks:

Which mean: 2 x 2.846 open rear diffs (1 is from 4ws 6g galant with 4ws pump etc), 1 x T-box 23 spline. 1-2x open front diffs (62 tooth), 2 sets of rear 3-bolt axles (non lsd), 2 sets front axles including 1 middle shaft.
And 2 engine blocks (1 is old G64B )
Oo, and a Eclipse rear VLSD. Dunno 3-bolt or 4-bolt.

This list is almost endless :thumb:

Question too: Does anyone have some literature about switchable gearboxes? Or where can I found these? Also, I am still interested, what this code mean on the gearbox.

Any updates? Have you got it all in and working? I've got something very similar, but haven't messed with it much.

It looks like a 1987-89 JDM GVR4 trans.

Tim I don't know if you've worked on a W5M31 before, but they are the n/t awd trans. They are kinda like the fwd transmissions, where they drive off of 4th gear instead of 3rd gear. The dsm ring and pinion would fit in that case so you could use it with a dsm rear end. I also know the CD spider gears from a dsm will fit, but you have to use a dsm vcu and end cover.

I have not worked on a W5M31, but I could likely source the parts if necessary.

Hi.
Sry, no updates.
Car has been standing in garage since 2012 June.
Building ~400-500hp engine from 4G63 (6-bolt) and renovating technical side. New paintjob already done, rear suspension is renovated-new bushings, bolts etc. All taken a part, cleaned, coated with stonechip (in here we have alot of dust, salt and humidity. Since we are planning to drive on all kind of road surfaces (kind of WRC, but local).

But over the last time I have been thinking alot about this switchable tranny.
It would be fun to drive with it. Hydraulic E-brake can easily hold rear tires standstill, and do fwd burnout, also front brakes can hold front tires standstill, and to rwd burnout (when CD is in open position), and when neccesary, go awd lock :D
That`s my good or bad idea.

If someone of you is interested in more pictures of this switchable tranny, then just ask. I will make some.
Or any other picture about my build.
:rocks:

I know I'm like a decade too late, but yeah how did it go? Just got a w5m31 from a friend and looking for options with it

Yeah it's an old thread.
Just a little correction. I think what the OP was referring to is the switchable trans from the early JDM Non turbo Galant since he mentioned it looks like a W5M31 or maybe the one from the early JDM Galant VR4 like Tim mentioned above.
If so, to use this trans as switchable, you need a matched switchable t-case, too. And I don't think you can convert your trans and t-case to switchable ones. You really need many parts that almost impossible to find. So if you want to make your car as 2WD/4WD switchable, to find a complete switchable trans and t-case would realistically be your option. Please refer the pics below for its mechanism.
And the trans is not W5M3. It's KM221 and KM225. Those are previous version of W5M3. The KM221 is like W5M31/32, KM225 is W5M33.
The switchable trans from JDM Galant VR4 has the same ratios as DSM. It's like a 90 trans with 22 spline. So can be used on DSM.

Ahh I see, just got a hold of a w5m31, and looking for ideas for what I can use it for
