Just got my block back from the machine shop, ive got surface rust on all cylinders and the deck of the block.. figured if you would be paying 1500 for machine work it would come back looking like gold but.. first block ive sent to a machine shop, & 1st build. Hope this doesnt slow me down..

Don't worry about that, take a rag soaked in oil and clean the walls off, scrub them. The deck you can gently scrub the deck with some mineral spirits of oil, I used an abrasive pad.... LIGHTLY, to remove any surface contamination..... any surface rust can be removed easily. I wouldn't worry about it

I rotated the crank and now I have a big line going down the cylinder wall.. I can barely feel it with the nail test, coworker of mine said the same thing.. im extremely dissapointed.. I soaked them in pb blaster and wiped with micro fibre rag before this happened but I guess the rings caught some rust..

I have a mark like that in one of my cylinders from where some gasket remover ran down in the cylinder. Mine is just a stain and looks just like that. Are you positive that it catches a nail? It could just be a mark and not a scratch.

Either way you still have the crosshatch in there so with how light that looks it will more than likely go away when the rings seat in

crappy machine work not smoothing end of ring after gapping, the rust is a non issue

Its fun isn't it! You learn quick to stop depending on others to waste your hard earned money....I always make sure I knock off all the burrs after filing my rings. I read an artical regarding the effects of deburing rings to much and causing compression losses....if you remove to much material on the back sides of the rings you create a channel multiplied by 8 and you can see how much of an effect it can have. This artical was v8 specific but I can see how you can create a problem for yourself. I lightly debur the end of the ring I filed with a honing stone I got from harbor freight. Haven't had a problem yet?
