So I have had the head off my car for awhile. I go out to work on it today and the block surface is rusted all to hell, since I checked it less than a week ago. There's rust going halfway down the cylinder walls...some kind of crazy flash rusting?

How should I get this crap off without screwing up my surfaces?

sounds like your gonna need to bore out the cylinders, or at least polish it somehow, but i would say boring its gonna be your best bet

I used lots of wd40 and scotchbrite pads to clean my cylinder walls off. Just make sure to no leave anything in he cylinders.

be careful how much your taking off too, if its alot your pistons wont seat them selves in there and you will lose compression

Well the wd40 will work to get it off, or possibly carb cleaner, this is why you put a coating of oil over things like this when they sit for a while open like that.

I would try that royal jelly rust remover stuff you can buy at the hardware stores. I would not use the SP pads as they tend to leave debis everywere from the pad and it will take the finish off the cylinder wall.

when this happend on my spare motor i just hit it with a couple light coats of wd40, then wiped it all out afterwards, car runs fine and perfect copression and everything

I've see some people use really fine sandpaper. I would call a machine shop and see what they would do.

I would just hit it with the wd-40 and if your still concerned hone the cylinder walls. Buy the tool do it yourself.
