I'm putting this in newbie forum because it seems like a newbie question. I've searched and gotten mixed results, but if you've found a thread via google or specific searching I haven't, throw it up.

My block has surface rust on the deck surface/HG mating surface. I plan to run a MLS gasket, and the block surface has been machined for an MLS, however the surface rust makes me paranoid and I'll be honest, I want it to be shiny and not dirty/surface rust colored. BogusSVO built the motor, and I couldn't be happier with it. He assures me that the surface is fine to run, and I trust him, but I still want it to be purty.

So, my question, how to clean the surface rust and such without "scratching" the surface and ruining the finish for the MLS gasket? I've found some results that said use steel wool and WD-40, and others saying not to do this but use a green scotch-brite pad and WD40, and again found more threads that said don't do this. Educated opinions and personal experience is very welcome here. The 4G64 has notorious sealing issues and I plan to push 65lbs/min on this motor, so I don't want to give it any more reason for HG issues.

Here's the block in question.

That's about what I was thinking. I had a few people say WD40 has the habit of working miracles with rust so I think I may try that. I guess I could always just clean the rust off and go with an o-ringed head and OEM Composite gasket w/ ARP 625+ headstuds or the "Red Demon" headstud kit. The main thing I am worrying about, is making the deck surface "unlevel" leading to a low spot. I dealt with that PITA on my old 1G and never again...

Good to talk with you btw. Thanks for the answer. I hope all is going well with you and the Laser. :)
