Okay so im sure theres tons of these threads but I'm trying to be very thorough and do this all right the first time. I just bought my 91 GSX its bone stock.. has tranny issues and a couple other minor things.

I sold my turbo civic for 6k bought this for 1k. So i've got that + some more to dump into this to make it the street warrior I want it to be.

I'm not looking for be a record breaker or anything, just want a solid build that I can daily drive and tear some stuff up with. I'm not 100% fluent yet in what's what for DSM and horsepower.. Like for me with my civic, 300whp I knew was great horsepower capable of mid-high 11's.

So i'm just going to build my car and then see what it makes.
Heres what I have so far from my friend's parted out 10 sec talon:
4 bolt rear end(already installed)
Shepherd Stage 3 Transmission(shifts like new, 8k on it)
6point cage
Recaro evo seats /w 5 point harnesses

I've been spending like all day putting this list together.

What i'm mainly looking for is advice if anyone sees something that for example, I could get something much better for the same/less/little more. Or if one of these things is considered 'junk'.. I tried to look for stuff with good reviews.

I'd like to buy all of this stuff tomorrow so it can start arriving ASAP.

Anyway onto the list:

Bolt ons:

Ebay 3" Turboback Exhaust.. would be replacing muffler with Thermal R&D (i know it all bolts up, my buddy got it, just the muffler is like 5" ridiculous so im getting a thermal r&d)
Punishment Racing 3" Downpipe

38mm Tial Wastegate
FP Race Exhaust Manifold

FP 4" Intake
Fluidyne radiator /w 2 summit slim pusher fans
JMFab Street intake manifold

4bolt rear end(already installed)
ACT2900 Clutch Kit

Suspension/Other

Megan Coilovers
Ebay front&rear swaybars

If i missed anything let me know.
im going to pick up a few other misc things like some drag radials and such.

like I said im wanting to go ahead and buy most all of this stuff tomorrow, so any input/advice is greatly appreciated.

thx

You have a good taste of parts, what minor problems do you have besides tranny ones?

oil leak from cam seals, valve seals smoke a bit.

the timing belt is about gone.. it's about 1/6th of the thickness it should be. all the teeth are ground down. i was a nervous wreck about it driving the car home 4 hours haha but it made it. now i just gotta drive it to school for the paint on december 11th, then back home where the tear down will begin. even if it breaks in that one drive i dont care since im going to be putting all new vales/pistons in anyway haha.

couple other minor probs:
idles like it has 272's when cold, if it still does it after build i'll diagnose it.

sometimes dies when pushing in clutch after accelerating

needs new brakes

Look into weight reductions, a roll cage wouldn't hurt either running at the track 280 hp or 300+ when a suspension fail occurs shit happens even at the street illegally raccing shit think of safety....

Other than that good luck I can already imagine a best bein born goo to see a good tuner on it's way to the top and be prepare for speed bumps in ## build be prepared for do overs and everything that might be a problem but other than that nice build!!!

Now let's see it happen

Looks like it will be pretty sweet. Are you sticking with the stock flywheel or have you considered a Fidanza or anything like that?

Tks for suspension advice, i'll look into those.
also the bushing mention reminded me i need motor mounts too. i'll chalk that up

yeah i already got the cage, gotta cut it outa my buddie's old shell tho but it's a full 6point cage NHRA legal. I dont do a ton of track racing but i'd like to b able to go when i want and have some fun there. Mostly this car will be a street machine but i wont discuss all that here.

Weight reduction wise im going to get rid of all unnecessary wiring that i can. A/C will be removed. rear seats will be tossed. going to keep my interior other then that. Power steering going to get removed, trying to find a 1.8 manual steering rack.

I'd really like a carbon fiber driveshaft but im already spending so much on stuff and the CF driveshafts are not cheap at all.

i'm still not sure, trying to get more info.
my buddy said he stuck with a stock flywheel becaues the heavier flywheel having more momentum he thought helped with maintaining the powerband between shifts, but he said he never searched into it and one of our friends recently got an aluminum flywheel for his car and very noticably affected the speed of his revs so he said to do whatever.

i think i may get one.

Looks like someone has to much money LOL.... if you want you can just pick me up a intake pipe off ebay shipped to 49546, k thanks!

On a serious note, looks like a good build. Just do your research, everything listed is on here. If you run into snags along the way let us know, we can help ya out.

LOL its really not that expensive when you think bout it.

having 5k from my civic to spend, and some of the high dollar parts like the transmission already taken care of for cheap.

I mean, a lot of ppl spend as much jumping from one horsepower goal to another and only end up with like 300whp.

And im getting a pretty awesome discount on all this stuff as long as I order most of it thru a certain place, so that helps :)

Looks like you know what your doing. keep us updated with your build. Take pics of EVERYTHING:)

Looks solid but if there is one thing I have learned, is that it always costs more than you intended.

Have fun with it though. If you have issues, don't get all pissed and shit. Cars are amazing. You can just walk away and they don't care. :)

haha i learned that in building my civic although it did come together pretty well and held together well aside from the transmissions!!

Haven't seen anybody mention it yet, but you can reach the power goals you mentioned with a much smaller turbo that the 35r that would spool a lot better. An Evo III on e85 should get you pretty close to where you want to be. There are guys running 11's on the stock turbo...no need to upgrade to a 500+hp turbo

The only problem I notice is that the FP Race Exhaust Manifold will be a Mitsubishi flange, and if you go with the Garret GT35R it will not bolt up.

I'm bout to be coming into some money from my motorcycle wreck, so I've working on a build for my stock 1g also. You look to have covered everything but also remember to respect the dsm god's, replace all belts, studs, and anything you find broken during the tear down.

Yeah the guy whose shop I'm getting most of my stuff through told me that today.
So I'm going with something else, not sure yet.

Staying with the GT35R as i intend to go pretty far with this car. I'd like to see 10's perhaps.. I didn't wanna throw around numbers in the thread but thats my goal.

Updatin this thread

yeah i got a walbro 255
Almost everything arrived yesterday and today.
Still missing a couple things.

In the mean time I've pulled the head, replaced the headgasket with another OEM one.
I've got a second 6 bolt block that I'm building as everything comes. I'm going to push this one until I have the other one ready or the stock block pops.

I ended up ditching the GT35R to keep my FP manifold and spent about $900 less.. Bought an HX40 /w BEP housing that needs rebuilt. My rebuild kit for it will hopefully be here by thursday.

Almost everything else that has got here already is already on the car. Clutch/ Shep trans are in.
Rear end is in. I'm waiting for my intake manifold gasket and my cam seals to get here and I'll be ready to put the head on, I still have a few things on the head to button up. Puttin in the valves and springs was a bi***.

Hopefully the car will be running by the weekend. I may mock it all up with the 14b if everything else is good by tomorrow since the stuff I absolutely need like the cam seals and intake mani gasket SHOULD be here today.

I'd like to drive it home for Thanks Giving and give that 14b the run of its life. All my other issues with the car I started with are gone with the shep trans and other new stuff/fixes. I got sent the wrong timing belt, a regular OEM one and I ordered the gates blue belt. However we have two DSMs at our shop, and one of them is here for headstuds, headgasket, cam install, and new timing. His old belt was still in decent shape so I took it for now. So i ought to be fine since I already got and installed all my new pulleys/tensioner.

I'm pumped to get it on the road, even if its not all the way done yet. We spent all night last night working on and I've been working on it all morning today.

Looks like you've done you research and put alot of thought into that. If you have any questions about what order to install them or anything like that, check out the upgrade paths. they have a really good breakdown of everything in there.

Looks like you've done some research and are on the right track:thumb:
Just don't forget to keep some money aside for future repairs and maintenance of course
