Well, after extensive searching and believing my car had a spun bearing, I still need some convincing about what is wrong. When idling, the car seems to want to die and makes a noticable CLANK CLANK CLANK noise coming from the motor. The noise gets louder with an increase in RPMs. I read that the noise should eventually disappear if the RPMs go high enough, but I never took them that high in fear of causing more damage. The car has been sitting for almost 3 months since I'm hella-broke and have a few other things on my agenda to take care of first. However, I should be seeing some extra cash in the next few weeks and want to know what I need to to replace. If it is a spun bearing, I will be picking up either new OEM ones or ACL bearings since I've read that clevite is no longer as good as they used to be. As for the crank, I also read that Mitsu states they are non-servicable items so I'll probably pick up a used 6 bolt crank, and have it hot tanked and balanced then throw that in. Will my rods be damaged if I did spin a bearing? Also, can my pistons be damaged as well? I only drove the car maybe 1/2 mile after it happened to get it to my mechanic. He told me I needed a whole new engine when he just replaced mine only 6 months earlier. I said F that and since the head was just rebuilt not even a month ago, asked if it was good. He said it was fine. Then why the hell do I need a completely different motor? I'm done with this guy after that and want to do if myself. I just need some opinions about what exactly could be wrong and what needs to be replaced. Sorry for the long post but if anyone could chime in, it would mean a lot. Thanx to everyone :thumb:

A lot of it depends on if you were shooting metal shavings through the engine. If your engine is only 6 months old, it should be under warranty. So you don't trust the guy, that's cool, make him get you a replacement engine and then swap it out yourself. Shoudn't cost you any money. I spun a bearing in my 2g and it blew up my turbo from the metal shavings as well as caused engine problems including the loud knocking noise. Just make sure that all your oil lines are free and clear of metal, your oil pan has no metal, and the filter is clean. A lot of the damage depends on how far things got. If you are going to be redoing the crank anyway, you aren't going to know until you pull it apart. I replaced the whole engine so I wouldn't have to worry about internal damage. Anyway, those are my thoughts on it.

wait wait wait, 6 months??? did he do the work or did you do the work. If he did I would make him pay for not knowing how to put a bottom end together, and give you money to get somone that does to build you one! No you pistons will be fine, and your rods should be fine as well. Pm me if you need anything.

He did the work. My 7 bolt walked so I had him put in a used "low-mileage" 6 bolt. I was told since it was used that it only came with like a 2 month warranty so I'm pretty much screwed in that case. Now that the spring is hear, I'm gonna be dropping the oil pan and having a look.
The shop he works at is a well-reputible DSM place. I always noticed 1g's and 2g's outside the place. The guy who did my work had a 2.4l talon built supposedly arond 450hp. Now he drives an 05 EVO MR. Apparently he knows what he's doing but I'm thinking he really didn't care too much and just wants money. I went to him for the 6 bolt swap, then went back in november cause I had cracked a valve and had the head rebuilt. When I bought it in after I noticed the knocking noise, he had a look. About a week earlier, I noticed the car was running low on oil so I added a couple of quarts of synthetic and she seemed to run near perfect. He said that he never uses synthetic in DSMs and that when he rebuilt the head he used regular 10w-30. He said the mix cause the motor to go bad. I did some research and found out that this kind of damage shouldn't be caused by that after that short amount of time. The kid who sold me the car has a 97 gsx that he sent to this guy for a 6 bolt swap and had nothing but complaints about it. I was really nice to the guy and he seemed like a good guy as well. After this, I'm done with him.

ok i dont trust many shops anymore...granted i dont take mine to any

we have a guy here that has a nasty 96 Supra, there are a "performance shop" but i would never recommend anyone going there for anything other then tires...

as for your problem...it does very well sounds like a rod knock, although it could be your clutch chattering or it could also be your valvetrain. its hard for guys only to diagnose your car because its mainly feeling and hearing the car to understand whats wrong.

when you drop the pan check for play in the rod if it moves...then you can TRY to put new bearings and get lucky your crank isnt screwed, however if you want to do it the right way...you should probably put a crank in and save the heartache(you have to pull your engine to do this anyway...)

I now know what you mean about the shops. I would do my own work, I have the basic knowledge (attended UTI for a couple of months before dropping out) but don't have the tools and working on cars in winter is a PITA. However, some friends do have the tools so they will be giving me a hand. I don't think its the valvetrain since the head was recently rebuilt, but you never know. I'll be sure to check for play in the rods when I drop the pan. Can I at least check the crank without pulling the motor? Not sure if i can or not. As for just putting in new bearings, I want to fix it right so I won't just be doing that.

Mine spun a bearing recently. Right now we're rebuilding the engine at school. It all depends on how much wear took place if and when the bearing spun. Mine spun and shaved quite a bit off the crank and rod. The crank is already ten under so I'm having to get a crank and my rod wore a lot too so I have to find another. It all depends on how much wore and how many metal shavings went through the engine. Some can put bearings in and get away with it. Then again I've seen others that make it a couple hundred miles before it happens again. It all depends on how much has worn. Good luck.

Thanx for the reply. Anybody else with first hand experience? So I'm probably looking at new bearings, crank, and maybe rods? I'm thinking about also installing some ARP hardware and maybe a balance shaft eliminator kit. Anything else I might as well do while I'm there. Keep in mind money is limited so I can't put in forged internals or anything like that.

Blane, what you need to do is contact a lawyer and ask him what your options are. How much money have you spent at ### rodrigos shop trying to get the car to run straight and now hes saying u need a whole new motor? #### that, That shop should take responsibility for their work, even if it is half assed. Rodrigo would only care about making the car run good if it was his. He will try his best to keep making money off you in repairs and parts. After all this, new motor and new head, #### man yur car should be running great. And this shop is by no means reputable, it is just the closest around to us locally and the people that dont know any better go there. Now that i know them, i wouldnt trust them to put an intake on a civic. Please do us all a favor and take him to small claims court, you would be my hero. If you need anyone to testify shit, let me know, i and many people i know have many complaints with that shop. Blane, i wanna see the green beast back on the road this summer so fix that shit! :thumb:

Glen, you should post more on Tuners :thumb: . I'm gonna see what the damage is first myself. I really don't think I have to put new motor. The only reasone I haven't taken legal action is that he specified that the 6 bolt only had a 60 or 90 day warranty, cant remember which one. The damage occured like 6 months later. I know, I really got myself into a screwy deal. I just wanna fix it and enjoy my DSM for what it is. He won't be getting any business from me that's for sure.
