Headlight go completely out when I try to start on a battery with 11.8 volts and 700CCA. And it's a slow crank, with jumpers on it cranks slow still and headlights just go pretty dim, the battery i have in it hasn't been used in a vehicle in a. Our weeks. Also this is a project and I don't have a belt on my alternator yet. I was thinking it would be that or battery. Opinions?

You probably have a bad wire or starter. Small possiblity of a relay but I'm not sure if 2Gs even have one or not. Try putting the jumper cables directly onto the starter posts (easier said than done I know) then start it. If it fires its a wireing issue, if it doesn't then its time to shop for a new starter.

Do a voltage drop test from the battery to the starter to see if you have corrosion on your cables or a connection issue. You shouldn't see a drop of more than a few tenths of a volt. Also check your grounds.

11.8V, the battery is very DEAD. Get a new one or charge and load test your current one. I would not jump start a car with that dead of a battery either- alternators are NOT designed to charge a dead battery, just maintain. Good way to shorten the alts life.

If you switch it out with a good battery and still slow cranking, starter is shot. Those four brushes inside are not too big and wear out quite readily. Plus, the reduction gearcase gets worn out also.

Been there and done that with my DSM.

EDIT: Notice that you're a 420A. Dodge starters are known to go bad quite often.

Starter all day on the slow turn, unless internals are seizing or have some oddity in you oil mix (Wich is very doubtful)
:p

I had the same issue when I swapped my engine. Slow crank that would die out and not start. Checked all connections, changed batteries, and starters, but still had an issue. Finally decided to give it a little starting fluid for that initial combustion, started and haven't had a problem since.

I know you said it's fixed, however...for the future.

I had a slow crank...one of the bolts holding the ground strap on to the bell housing/starter bolts, was loose.

Tightened it, and its cranks fine.
