I just bought a 90 tsi awd. It wont go into second gear, it grinds. However reverse gives me trouble too. I was told it has a new clutch, now i have 2 questions 1. can improperly adjusted linkages give me this problem? Never tried 4th 2. How can i adjust them to test this theory?

With the transmission in nuetral pushing the shifter straight forward should put you in 3rd gear with no side to side movement, straight back would be 4th. If your shifter goes right into 3rd and 4th without any side to side movement your shifter doesn't need any adjustment.

Yes improperly adjusted linkages can cause this problem. You can adjust them by pulling off the center console and looking down at the shifter linkage. There are adjustment nuts that are pretty much self explanatory after you look at them.

On another note you might check out this vfaq since you've got a '90 Shifter Differences ('90 & '91-'94). If you read that first sentence in that write up it says "The shifters, shifter cables, and trannies are different between 1990 and 1991-94. If you put a 91-up tranny in your car, you have to change shifter cables." There might be a '91-'94 tranny in that car and the shifter cables didn't get switched?

Thanks that give me hope. My gut feeling is the tranny is not shot just adjustment from having the clutch installed.

When I throw my car into 3rd the stick has a LOT of side to side movement. What do I do with the shifter linkages to correct this?

Thanks.

Theres a lot you can do to give your shifter a more solid feel while its in gear, I'd do all 3 things if I were you.
-Symborski Shift Kit
-Shifter Bearings
-B&M Short Shifter

All of these things combined will give your shifter amazing feel when going in and out of gear. My GSX has all of the above and it clicks into gear clean and smooth, my GS is all stock and it feels like I'm shifting into a bowl of spaghetti.

Already did this.
Already did this too.
This is on my list but I keep struggling with getting it into 1st gear from a stop.

When it refuses to go into gear I'm forced to throw it into neutral, release the clutch, press the clutch and try to throw it into first again. Sometimes it takes more than one try.

Other times it goes into 1st smooth like butter but about 20% of the time it's like it's hitting a wall and wont go into gear.

What could cause this?

Thanks Tom.

Its all good as long as we can fix are cars right. Plus I saw you had a thread like this that no one replied to.

Have you tried bleeding the clutch? It's unlike brakes where you pump them up repeastedly, on the clutch you want to do one pump, then bled and repeat.

Next time you have trouble getting in to first, try this. Shift into second, leave the clutch pushed in and then put it into first. See if it's easier. That's just an old trick from beating around half trashed transmissions that seems to work well

also, a warped clutch disk can cause the clutch to drag even when pushed in and make shifting a b#tch.

Good suggestion, I'll bleed it again to make sure.

I'll dive that a shot but I still want to fix the problem.

Disk and PP are new. Flywheel has about 5000 miles on it.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep'em coming.
