I'm wondering if someone can help me here. For some reason when I try and put the shifter into reverse or 1st gear it feels like i have to punch it in. Sometimes I have to keep doing that it just feels really weird and I don't know why it is doing this.

Have you tried letting off of the clutch between tries? That's what I do when that happens.

I used rollar blade bearings in the tranny cable ends which work great and only cost $10:
