I am buying a 97 spyder gs tomorrow. The guy says that he was having trouble shifting into second, so he was messing with the cables and lost 2,3 & R. Do you think that the cables or the counterweight just needs to be adjusted or there is something wrong with something in the tranny?

I am going to start tomorrow by having my friend check while I shift the gears. any other things to check as a starting point?

I'm hoping its something simple. I guess even if it is the transmission, there are a lot of aftermarket parts I can strip off it. But, I'm really hoping to add this to my collection. Thanks!

I haven't had that problem, ^, but it makes sense. If the mounting points at either end of the cables are not properly attached you could have that issue.

I would just pop the underhood cable ends off and try manually shifting through the gears, if you dont see any obvious issues on the cables themselves. Also while they are off, get in the car and make sure they move freely at the trans end. That's probably a good starting point.

I popped the hood when we went and looked at it, Yep cables are bad. I can shift through all the gears on the transmission without issue. Now, I just need to find a set of cables. i found a set on extremepsi with a part # MIT-MD770982. anyone know if this is the right set? I have a 2.4 SOHC

Thanks for your help.

Just keep in mind that even if the syncros are blown, you should probably be able to manually shift the transmission through all gears since the trans isn't spinning. I'm in no way saying your syncros are bad, but just be carful with assuming all is good because you can run through gears when the car is off. Hope all goes well.

We were able to shift it into reverse to get it off the dolly. I'll take a pic of where the cable is messed up. It's right after the bracket by the transmission. Basically, just the boot of it.

I haven't been down to where my car is yet, but here is a photo i found that i edited to show what is wrong. Basically, the clamp has come loose on the one for the 2, 4, & R.

Also, here are a few pics of the car. The guy threw in a bunch of the stock parts including rear bumper, side skirts, headlights, and both doors. (in case I want to switch back to handles). We found an actuator installed in the drivers door, so that was a plus. There are a bunch of unplugged wires that we will have to figure out, but all in all. Its a good project.
