I heard too much good about shell rotella t6 synthetic so im gonna give it a try i went to walmart and got about 5quarts of it for $27 tax included! Im switching my oil from mobil 1 syn 10w-30 to Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic 5w-40 for winter time heard this oil is awesome and i read alot about how tough it is especially for turbos and heat! My car has moderate mods and sees max 24psi of boost and high rpms here and there. I do plan on switching when summer comes by to 10w-40 or 15w-50.

Here is the full information about this oil= http://www-static.shell.com/static/...ts_services/lubricants/rotella/rotella_t6.pdf

the flashpoints in the oils celcius converted to fahrenheit=

Shell Rotella t6 syn= 435.2f

Amsoil Dominator
5w-20 = 437f
10w-30= 453f
20w-50= 453f

Amsoil 20w-50= 451f

BradPenn=
ow-30= 385f
10w-30 10w-40 10w-50= 400f
20w-50= 420f

Royal Purple flashpoint 400f Royal Purple Racing Oil flashpoint 420f

Castrol Syntec ow20 threw 10w-40= 392f

Mobil 1 syn
15-50= 449.6f
10w-40=464f
10w-30= 446f
5w-30= 437f
5w-20= 442.4f
0w-40= 446f

Valvoline Fully Synthetic=
ow-20= 428f
5w-20= 429.8f
5w-30 and 10w-30= 433.4f

Valvoline Not Street Legal Synthetic=
5w-30= 460.4f
10w-30= 478.4f
20w-50= 500f

Valvoline vr-1 racing motor oil
10w-30= 429.8f
20w-50= 478.4f

So i see mobil 1 is better in flashpoint then the shell im using but i only plan on using it for winter time and the shell does contain more zinc then the mobil also has a better flashpoint then most oils i stated here and i would still choose bradpenn over mobil 1 even though mobil has a higher flashpoint because it has more zinc in it and forcedperformance even said its really good to use. Amsoil 100% synthetic and racing oils are expensive and 20w-50 oils are too thick for winter time. My car is not heavily modified or built motor so no reason to run racing oil either.

Shell rotella is good stuff, I have used it for years in my GVR4 with no issues on a non-catalytic converter car.

Yea it sounds awesome! It would be nice if they made it in 10w-40 so i can use it in summer time but im gonna put this oil in my car tomorrow and i hope im happy with it since its winter out here and that seems like really tough stuff and its a 5w so its perfect for winter time i just hope im not gonna see leaks i havent before since im goin down from a 10w to a 5w LOL

I'm not trying to sway you from making any choice on what oils to use...Or get OT

the shell does contain more zinc then the mobil.

But Just FYI
I'm not sure what type/weight/etc. of Mobile 1 your comparing to in all these threads but,
Not all viscosities of Mobil 1 oils have the same levels of zinc and phosphorus, and there are even greater differences among the three Mobil 1 motorcycle oils... Which are pretty good stuff. If you look at the specs on them, Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 come to mind specifically.

When i was using mobil 1 10w-30 i would get lifter tick at cold startup for 10min and it wouldnt go away sometimes unless i got on it but now that i switched to shell rotella t6 synthetic 5w-40 the lifter tick is gone so im happy about that :)

..means that you need new lifters in that motor, for well functioning lifters shouldn't tick no matter what weight of oil is in the crankcase.

Going thicker oil just quieted them down sooner ...

Something to make your green get ready for some needed work.

Who runs rotella shell t6 oil all year round? Winter summer and in between. What are your impressions for running it on summer?

I switched from mobil 1 10w-30 syn to shell rotella t6 syn 5w-40 for winter and my engine seems quieter and my lifter tick quieted down alot faster on cold start then when i was using mobil 1 10w-30 but im only using it for winter then i will switch back to a heavier weight spring/summer.

I'm thinking of switching from royal purple 10w30 to rotella shell t6 5w40 all year round. Summer and winter. I know its thinner but its also higher and has a higher flash point and much more zinc than royal purple. Besides, its cheaper too. So has anybody had any problems running 5w40 on summer? Or running rotella t6 5w40? I wish they made more grade options than just 5w40.
thanks.

I'm running the T6 synthetic 5w-40. It seems to be working perfect for me. I plan to get an oil analysis done after this oil change so I'll have an update then. I'm sending a virgin sample from what's left in the old bottle along with the oil that has been in my car for about 3,100 miles at this point. I'll probably change it around 4,000 miles and send it in.

Thank you very much knochgoon24. So what do you think about running this oil in summer where temps could get over 100*f?? I mght be wrong here so please correct me if so. My question is: Since this is a 5w40 oil. Is it ok to say that its better than 10w30 year round because its thinner for winter and cold start ups yet it tolerate heat better since its 40 instead of 30?? or provides better protection from heat?? This is where I'm getting a bit confused.
Thank you.

Don't Run 5w-* oils when it over 60° outside!

I'm going to run this year round in my car.

Well, according to this, taken from the shell link:
Shell Rotella T6 provides extra protection against breakdown
by heat and offers up to 70% better oxidation resistance,
compared to conventional SAE 15W-40 API CJ-4 oil.* Tests
also show up to 81% less deposits than average API CJ-4 SAE
15W-40 results**.

It seems that the shell rotetta t6 provides better protection from heat than the 15w40 does which is even thicker than your typical
10w30 oils. Not just that but it has a much higher zinc content than most synthetic oils and even race oils. The t6 oil also has detergents like your mobil 1, royal purple, etc. Something that race oils don't have. (according to FP).
If this is true, then the rotella t6 oil offers unsurpass protection against engine wear at low and high temperatures. Specially on startup which is where most of the engine wear happens.
So why shouldn't it be used on summer days or temperatures above 60*f???
Thanks.

Im with my1gdsm do not run 5w in temps over 60f even the manual for the car recommends 10w-30 or higher when the temps are above 60f imagine how thin that oil will be in summer when u cold start the car it will be like a 0w oil so no thanks! I only use the shell t6 syn cause its winter out here and temps range from 30f-negatives so it really helps out.

I do wish shell made the t6 syn in a 10w-40 i would def be using that in summer time but since they dont i will be running mobil 1 syn 10w-40 the flashpoint is 464f which is better then the shell rotella t6 which is only 435f.

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40
Nominal Phosphorus Level, PPM=900
Nominal Zinc Level,PPM=1000
Boosted, fully synthetic formula
designed for higher mileage
vehicles.
Higher viscosity
applications. SL
A3/B3-04,A3/B4-04
Just cause its high mileage doesnt mean u cant use it in a low mileage car.

Or Mobil 1 15W-50 which has a flashpoint of 449f
Nominal Phosphorus Level, PPM=1200
Nominal Zinc Level,PPM=1300
Boosted, higher viscosity, fully
synthetic formula designed for
performance vehicles.
HT/HS applications.
Racing and Flat tappet
applications.
