Hey guys, my 92 GSX decided to give me issues I am having a hard time figuring out. Not long ago one of my FMIC pipes disconnected while driving on the highway and I instantly lost power and the car sounded like somebody trying to imitate a machine gun sound. Well that was an easy fix, I just reconnected it and bingo all is well. Now, I was boosting it a little bit and as I reached about 7 psi it made a similar if not the same sound it did when the pipe fell out. Not its gotten worse to where I can barely spool 3 psi before it does this. Its like the car drives ok without hitting boost. Sometimes though when pulling out or accelerating it starts making that sound then all of a sound it goes back to driving like normal, almost like its a loose connection somewhere that occasionally gets grounded out then ok (except when boosting). Any ideas? I went over my entire intake line over and over again adjusting things to make sure they are tight and wont leak. Could it be ignition issue? Im so lost and its driving me NUTS... Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Sounds to me like a massive boost leak. First thing I would do is check that out. I know you said you checked all the couplings but there may be a slit in the bottom of one of the hoses, could be a hole in the intercooler. Eliminate the obvious causes first then go from there.

Pull your spark plugs as well, make sure they are still good and are not melted in any way

An IC hose shouldn't come off all the time unless something is stressed to the point of not being able to stick onto the pipe... sounds like a rotten pipe or the contact point has no flange left to grab no matter how hard you tighten it... bad clamps?

I just looked at your profile and noticed that you just have a FMIC as your mod.. are there flanges on your pipes?

Most of the pipes do not have flanges. this mod was done before I even bought the car. Ive been undoing previous owners mistakes and rig jobs ever since I owned the thing..... I never know what Ill find next...

OK, so Ive been watching youube videos of DSMs with boost leaks and they all just whistle really loud. Mine dont whistle at all, in fact my literally stops boosting... My car goes from the smooth engine sound to something resembling a machine gun style sound...

It sounds like you might be getting fuel cut from a boost leak to me. Instead of watching videos on youtube about boost leaks why don't you just do yourself a favor and build a boost leak tester and test it.;)
Good luck!:thumb:

It could be anything from a hole in the intercooler to a slash in a coupler to a fuel injector o-ring.

A machine gun like sound is generally a misfire, I'd say check your entire ignition system and make sure everything's working properly, and as always when having problems (like stated before) BOOST LEAK TEST. It's one of the most important tests you'll do on these cars.

im 100% certain it has to be a boost leak or your spark plug wires, when i first installed my fmic the lower pipe came loose and i felt the back fire like you did instant power loss couldn't even drive it home till i fixed it, you never forget a sound or shake like that backfire...2 weeks later when i hit the gas at maybe like 5psi i felt the same thing and a shit load of backfire, i got out checked the fmic pipes but everything was fine...i went threw everything wires, sensors whatever i can grab i tested everything was fine, i ended up changing my spark plug cables.... miss fire was gone! so id double check the fmic pipes and couplers make sure there's no rips or holes and if you can afford it just change your spark plug cables out and check your plugs.... that being said ill never regret going speed density! good luck man!
