Hey Fellas. So I've got a 97 gsx and I need a little help. This all started when i missed an aggressive 1 to 2 shift.
Firstly, how exactly does one carry out a boost leak test? I think I may be doing it wrong cause I can only get about 8psi. Secondly, the reason I'm trying a boost leak test is because the car tries really hard to make boost but cant hold it. My gauge rapidly reads anywhere from around 6psi to 19psi and the car bucks and shudders and falls on it's face when trying to make boost. Stay out of boost, and the car drives normally. Also, when attempting the boost leak test, there is pressurized air coming from the tube that comes out of the left hand side of the valve cover. Not sure what to call this tube. It is routed to my intake, near the pcv hose. Also, there is much more oil in my intake track than I expected to find. Standing oil all the way to the throttle body. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

that's definitely a leak...you....are doing the boost test with the car off, right? if there is air coming out somewhere, that's where your leak would be...

If you still have a rev limiter then it doesn't matter. It's not good, but one accidental redline free-rev isn't going to hurt anything (well, anything that wasn't destined to break anyways).

Only building 8psi with an air compressor points to a huge boost leak. That would explain your driving issues. Spray the intake piping with soapy water while pumping in compressed air. Any leaks will show up as bubbles.

The tube on the left of your valve cover is part of the PCV system. Try rotating the crankshaft 1/4 turn or so and see if that helps. But lots of air rushing out of that port and large amounts of oil in the intake could indicate bad piston rings. I'd also check your PCV valve to make sure it's clean and fully functioning.

If you dont have a compressor:

Soak your intake and piping in soapy water, using the adapter that everyone knows how to make from home depot: COUGH http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-parts-fabrication/386650-how-build-boost-leak-tester.html COUGH, hook up a bike pump, or one of those little emergency ciggarette lighter compressors, and start pumping.

Cleans your engine bay while youre at it ;D

Like above, make sure you test the PCV, i had a pretty terrible leak last week, Turns out i could blow through the valve, with my breath. Good god.

Ignore above post about no compressor. I have to stop reading things to quickly.

Thank you guys. I'll try those ideas out. I had tried the bike pump and could only get 2 to 4psi to hold. My cig lighter compressor is how I got to 8psi. Could I have bent a valve or hurt the engine? Leaks I can likely fix. I dont have it in me to make serious engine repair anytime soon.

Thats the key though, pre soak the area before pumping. the air leaving the leak will cause bubbles, even at 4psi.

Unless its like, a hole that a leprechaun could stand up in. In which case you should be able to visual that. The leprechaun especially.

Just wanted say this issue is now resolved. Never could find or hear any leaks at all. So, i replaced all my intercooler pipes with RRE hard pipes. Problem fixed. If i had to guess id say there was a leak in the lower flex section. Replacing that seemed to clear it all up.

ive blew so many charge pipes off your car will barely run 90% of the time when you hit boost real hard then it just falls on its face should be a charge pipe broke or loose or off some were even with the hard pipe kit but yea the factory rubber and plastic pipes are the first upgrade everyone should change
