ok so I was searching through some old invoices in the folder that I got from the previous owner when I bought the car and I found that my car has an HKS head gasket and ARP bolts. Well, I screwed some #@%#@%#@%#@% up on the motor(2 years has gone by since it was rebuilt and since I bought it) and need to rebuild it and a friend of mine was sayin that I don't need a new head gasket and bolts.

Opinions and/or info please on this...thanks

:dsm:

Its fine to re-use it. Just make sure it is 100% before putting it back on. gsx951 thats wicked funny to use regular semi gloss spray paint on it to held give it a semi hardend coating...I would never have though.

To the OP IF the HG is no longer good, and you don't have the fund's to get another Cometic HG then get an OEM replacement. They are good for 30-33psi. Oh yes, this is redund but make sure the head, and block deck's are CLEAN.

Update us on what you did with the gasket, and how everything went with it.

That was someone else who used spray paint, I'm into copper spray. :)

You can reuse them but i dont sugest it. Once it has been crimped down the gasket is squashed, which makes the seal. The next time it is used, it can not squash down anymore than it already is. But thats just my 2 cents.

Cometic head gaskets are designed to be reused. They use (and reuse) them in racing applications, I don't see it being a problem in your street car.

I put about 25,000 miles on mine and blow the motor. I took the head gasket off and reused it on another 6bolt rebiuld. It has been running strong for about 15,000 miles now. :thumb:

not to jack the thread, but i didnt want to start another one thats simular. but what about a mitsu multilayer head gasket.

No.Unless you are using a multi layer steel or copper gasket. Also you should replace the headbolts everytime. If you have arp studs check them for stretch they can usally be reused 2 or 3 times

I always replace the head gasket. Do you want to take the chance of it not sealing and having to take it all apart again? An organic (stock style) always has to be replaced. Mls gasket some peoplereuse and get away with.

Okay i had to rip the head off because the car did not start due to bad head work that had not been recognized. Its a MLS head gasket that has no miles on it, do you think it would be cool to re-use it.

i have a 92 eclipse gst.

yea re-use it, you'll be fine. i just pulled my head yesterday cause i had a mls on there that was leaking oil everywhere(cause i didnt resurface head and block) so i just put a oem mitsu on there and called it a day. no more leaks.

My vote is to re-use it. Give it a good look over and make sure it's 100% clean and you should be alright. I have re-used them before even after running the car and came out with perfect compression. It might not work everytime but in your case I would certainly recommend giving it a try.

I ran my car for 2 miles on a brand new headgasket and decided to pull my head due to low compression put a new block on the car and used to same head gasket. No problems with my car but better safe than sorry I say

if you can do it yourself then i would if your paying someone then no.
yourself=only time
someone else=money that can be better spent elsewhere

should i go with a MLS again because Ive decided to just buy a new one.

Like the guy above said, if you are doing the work I'd still say re-use the old one. But if you must buy a new one, yes I'd definitely get a MLS gasket.

I am going to be doing the work myself, I'm going back and fourth o whether to re-use it or not. Sense i am going to be doing it myself "like said in a post above" all I'm loosing by re-using it is time if it doesn't work. So I'm probably going to re-use it and if it doesn't work, buy a new one...its not my DD so if it has to sit it will be okay.
