before i get flammed...i've done some searches and havn't found the exact answer i was looking for. I have 95 2g with dsm link already, well that car is down and i plan on building up my 1g. i wanna know if i can swap the 2g ecu into the 1g, and what all is needed to complete the procedure correctly.

Just make a jumper harness so you don't have to hack up your current 1g harness. Go to the junk yard and get 2g ecu plugs (female) and a 1g ecu board (male) and just crack the plugs off the board.

Vfaq has the ecu pin outs you need to do this.

You will also need a 2g knock sensor.

Just look for the diagram for a EVO ecu in a 1g(there are like 3-4 wires tops that are swapped from it) It's not that hard to make the harness I've made a few. It will save you A LOT of headache just making a jumper harness though.

My Car was just running on a 99 ECU the other day :)

Do some research, circa 2003.

Back when DSMLink wasn't available for the 1g, this swap was pretty popular.

The published diagram is perfect.

For reference this is what he is referring to dsmlink1g Yes I know the link is not good... But, if you can't figure out how to see it you shouldn't probably be trying this.

We have like 5 cars in our group all running 98/99 flashable ECUs and all of us have just solder each wire individually between the two and then added a plug to flash the ECU and another OBDII port. Seems to work pretty well and I will do this to every 1g I get. We have three 1g DSMs, a Mirage and a Colt running this way.

Between the wires I cutoff on the 1g harness and the 2g ends. It is about 35ish connections to solder I guess and all told took me about 3 hours outside the car. I also continuity checked the pins and removed some things I did not need like AC, cruise and other sensors.

That's all good if you don't plan to put a 1g ecu back in or anything but that Type of Ecu... . How do you do it outside the car if your soldering the 2g plugs directly to the harness???

But, either way by any means it's not an advisable way to go about it. IMHO

Some people swap out various Ecu quite often and it's not very practical doing the work in the car when you can do it at a work bench and build a Patch harness. And have it be reversible.

I gotcha but I just took the harness out. Did the work and put it back. I would never even consider going back to a 1g and older 2g ECUs.

I has a simple lock at the FW. I just disconnected everything and fed the wire from inside the car into the engine bay took the wiring harness and did the work on a bench with good lights. It also gave me a chance to remove stuff and then I taped/wireloomed it and put it back.

Honestly, if you plan on keeping the car long term I would recommend soldering the connections.

Oh I see you didn't say you pulled the whole harness... .

still say regardless either way a patch harness is going to be the best/easiest route.

That said Im all about cleaning up the factory wiring harness as mine is good couple feet shorter then it came with a lot less wiring ... .
