Later this summer (hopfully july) I plan on having all the parts neccesary to remove my head, replace my hg, resurface my head, and put arp head studs on. Hopfully also have new lifters, valves, retainers, etc. but at my budget I think thats too much to ask. I am trying to research all the nitty gritty details that most people dont talk about when it comes to removing the head on my 95 GST and taking it appart so that a machine shop can resurface it. Anyone know of a walk-thru for a 2g (not the 1g laser walkthru) to do the head removal, take appart, and to install the arps and the head? Special Tools, Tool sizes, torque specs, things to remove, ways to do it, what little seals/parts/whatever will I need to buy etc? I want to have EVERYTHING I need so that I won't have to try and get a friend to give me a ride to the store to buy whatever I will need seeing as how this is my only ride. For tools I have a floor jack, several jack stands, your basic socket set, and a wratchet gear set, screw drivers, and a few other misc tools. Thanks for the help guys!

I've been reading this thread: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159764&page=2&pp=25&highlight=removing+head

and I can see I'll need this so far:

New valves and seals (optional)
New oem metal HG
Thermostat housing gasket
Intake manifold gasket
New lower insulators for the fuel injectors
Timing tensioner special tool and a vice.
10MM Allen into pretzels trying to break the head bolts loose. (not sure what into pretzels means? someone help me with this one)
Fuel Filter
16 valve stem seals
5 quarts of oil
A gallon of coolant

I've already done alota work in december w/ replacing the water pump, timing belt, b/s removal, replaced the crank pulley, all the seals around that side of the motor. I also did a hahn super 16g install which required me to replace the manifold studs and gaskets for the turbo.

Anyone else see any other small misc parts I will need to order that I have not listed here?

Removing the head is actually a fairly simple process. All you really do is disconnect all the tubes and wires connecting to it, then remove the timing belt and valve cover. Now the only thing holding it to the block is the head bolts and exhaust mani. Take all of the head bolts out(loosening a bolt and then its most opposite if that makes sense). I even left the intake mani and exhaust mani on and used them to lift it up(you'll need two people for that).

Then disassembly of the head is simple as well. Just unbolt everything and make sure you set it aside in the order you took it out so it goes back in correctly.

I would definately get the new valve seals. I made the mistake of not doing it and now my car has started smoking at idle and i just kick myself for not doing it. You may also want to get a new valve cover gasket, spark plug seals, and the semi circle seal as well. I also didn't see a exhaust mani gasket in your list.

As far as tools are concerned you should be good as long as you have a torque wrench cuz you don't want to over/under tighten stuff.

Thats all i can think of right now, maybe someone else will chime in

The Hahn Super 16g install kit comes w/ new exhaust mani gaskets, and I got new valve cover gaskets, spark plug gaskets and half moon gasket less than 30k miles ago. Still think I need the valve cover gaskets?

Also what is the pattern I need to untorque and torque the head bolts down? Also what are the torque specs I would need? I'm a poor man w/o a shop manual and I've gotten then far w/o one and I figure I can get even further heh.

You can get the DSM cd which has the shop manual for $5 - $10. The manual tells you which order and specs. Just do a search for it.

I have that cd w/ the CAPS but i dont see how that will tell me about the 2000+ year model cars. I thought this cd was taylored (sp) to 90-99?

*edit* whoops...I replied to this thread thinking it was this thread: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180533

I dont know where in the CAPS cd all those specs and orders are :( ive been lookn w/o any luck.

So in relation to that thread linked above, does anyone have any answers to that too?

hey instead of using the allen wrench go to an auto parts store or hardware store and buy a 3/8 drive 10 mm allen wrench. It works great thats what i used its like a socket with an allen wrench attached to it i got mine for like 3$. Makes the job a little easier and quicker to. :thumb:

The caps CD won't tell you. You have to look in the dealer manual on that CD.
