I went to go and get my head resurfaced yesterday because I broke my motor down a couple of days ago. This is a fully built head with 1mm oversize intake and exhaust valves. So the next day I go pick my head up, and the machinist tells me that he couldn't do it because the valves stuck out to far past the surface of the head. He told me that he would have to remove all the valves to resurface it. I wanted to know is that something normal b/c of the oversize valves, or is it just the result of a halfass valve job?

We can't really tell without seeing.
I gave up on surfacing aluminum heads decades ago, because I never saw a "straight" one. That's just me.
Was this shop otherwise going to resurface an assembled head? Eeergh.

That should be done before the head gets resurfaced. I wouldnt trust him much if he was going to try and resurface it assembled.

I thought that the valves should always be seated far enough in the head where it wouldn't go past the surface of the head. It is barely sticking out, but you can feel just a little bit of the edge of the valve. I'm asking beacuse I have never this problem with a stock head so I was just wondering if this is normal.

i agree with CS, ive never seen a head resurfaced with it still assembled. i had my 1g head resurfaced and hottanked and the shop took it apart before they resurfaced it($165). has your current head been resurfaced before? maybe he meant it couldnt be resurfaced again because there will be clearance issues after the resurfacing especially since your valves 1mm oversized... just a thought though. forget that shop and find a better one, and when you get your head back after its resurfaced, get a straight edge yard stick and make sure its flat!!
