2G Replacing crank position sensor

Replaced my head gasket and then got a no start. Didn't have spark and CEL threw off a code for crank sensor A circuit. Pulled the old sensor and will pick up a new one to put in. I noticed my crank plate isn't shiny (has brown coating on it). Do I need to try to clean this before I replace the sensor? Anything else I should check? What possible reason is there for the sensor going bad?

Like any thing made especially car parts things eventually will fail, wear and tear, grab another and drop it in.

No need to clean the plate unless its that much dirt that it reaches the sensor.

Is there any rubbing marks on the plate or sensor? If so, your crank has end play.

Do you need to... Probably not, but I would recommend cleaning it. I don't see any reason not to.
