I am reinstalling some cams in a spare head (out of car), and when I bolted down the cam, all of the valves are no longer flush with the surface of the head, like the springs are being compressed. I turned the cam 360* and checked every 90* and there are always valves protruding. I know the valves aren't bent. Did I miss something during reinstall? The caps are all on correctly.

Well, um, the purpose of the camshaft is to open the valves. Those bumps on the cam are what is holding the valves open. That is why when you turn the cam the valve open and close. Please do some reading on how an engine works. It will greatly benefit you in the future. Tres....

I understand what a cam lobe is jackass. The valves are ALWAYS stuck open no matter what position the cam is in, including the dowel pin at 12 o' clock.

All you need to do is stick a paperclip or similar piece of metal down the oil hole and bleed down the lash adjusters.

I took this from a different thread I found:

Oh and good call on describing falcon8r in your last post, you hit the nail on the head :thumb:

Just make sure you prime the motor well before you start it. Pull the MPI/Engine fuse and turn it over about 10 times for about 5-10 sec each. You'll have good oil pressure up to the head filling the lifters with oil again.
Sorry I couldn't help you out earlier, I had to log off.

Correct me if I am wrong but that method will only works on the 3g style lash adjusters. If the head has the 1g lash adjuster the holes will be to small for the paper clip.

Then you find something smaller :thumb:

It works with the 2g lifters, I don't know if the 1g lifters are smaller though but I don't believe so.

Thanks for the help guys, the lifters are definitely filled still. One thing, they are all the 1g style lifters, and the only paper clip I could find is just a tad bit too big, and it is a bit larger than the standard size. What have you guys used to bleed them down? Maybe this is why the head I was trying in another car wasn't getting any compression a while ago :ohdamn:

Just find some small sturdy metal. If the paperclip you have is too big by a bit, just shave it down or goto Staples or Office Max (somewhere) and find one that is just a bit smaller but still sturdy.

Im too lazy to go out and get something. Ill try looking around for something. I'll be back with results. Thanks again fellas.

I bled the intake side and the valves sit flush, and after looking at the exhaust side I replaced first, they are all almost flush now. Thanks again guys

Hey guys i had the same problem as the OP and wanted to say thanks. I love this forum.
